嘉靖年间，倭寇横行，徐渭的才名受到胡宗宪赏识，招其为幕府文书。入幕之初，他为胡宗宪作《进白鹿表》，受到明世宗朱厚熜的赏识。当然，徐渭也有无可奈何的事情，当时的胡宗宪与严嵩来往甚密，徐渭的姐夫兼好友沈炼就因弹劾严嵩惨遭杀害，徐渭不得不虚与委蛇，替胡宗宪写了很多吹捧严嵩的文章。
