With 13 years of experience in teaching at international schools, I earned my bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Tianjin University and was subsequently admitted to the master’s program in applied mathematics at Nankai University on the basis of outstanding academic performance. As a bilingual mathematics teacher, I teach a variety of mathematics courses, including those aligned with the North American curriculum, the Commonwealth curriculum, the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE), and the Canadian curriculum. I actively participate in professional development workshops for international educators and have guided students who have gone on to attend universities around the world.

Olive Liu’s teaching style is a vivid embodiment of her philosophy on education. She is dedicated to helping students truly understand the value of mathematics. The North American-oriented mathematics curriculum she teaches “offers a broader scope of knowledge compared to the standard school curriculum, providing an excellent foundation for university-level mathematics courses abroad, particularly in North America.” This prepares students to avoid the challenges of language barriers and insufficient foundational knowledge when they pursue their studies overseas in the future. “Furthermore, the exams allow for a margin of error, giving students room to make mistakes and experiment.”

She specifically noted that statistics is particularly practical and interesting because “whether students go on to study the humanities, STEM fields, or even other disciplines, the ability to interpret and analyze data and solve problems is essential.”

How can knowledge be transformed into skills? Olive uses statistics as an example: “Every new piece of knowledge is problem-driven,” such as exploring whether “there are gender trends in STEM fields.” “Then we create a visual workflow: we need to design an experiment (to determine whether there is gender discrimination in company hiring practices). I encourage students to participate actively, think critically, propose their own ideas, and discuss them with one another.” She also has students collect real-world data and try to draw their own conclusions.

“Even in more theory-heavy calculus courses, whenever we encounter problems that can be applied to real-world situations—such as optimization problems, rates of change, and kinematics—I encourage students to try them out for themselves. Only when students apply the knowledge themselves—especially when they do so with genuine interest—do they truly internalize this way of thinking and develop these skills.”
