1911年8月22日，世界名画《蒙娜丽莎》在巴黎被盗。警方说有人在半夜悄悄溜进罗浮宫，盗走了它。然而就在两年后，《蒙娜丽莎》却再次现世，以为风头已过的偷盗者，想把它卖给佛罗伦萨乌菲兹美术馆，随后遭警方逮捕。
他声称《蒙娜丽莎》是达芬奇所作，是意大利人的财产，所以应该回到意大利。因此，偷盗者得到了意大利国民的广泛同情，最后被意大利象征性地拘禁了六个月。
