香港车辆一部车辆通常只要登记一次，由运输署编配车辆登记（车牌）号码，并将车辆予以适当分类，例如私家车、轻型货车等。发出车辆牌照，即给予车辆在道路上行驶的权利。牌照有效期分一年及四个月两种。
本港的汽车代理商通常会替顾客申请车辆登记及领牌，但如果私人进口车辆，则须亲自办理该等手续。
车辆登记后，亦须领取牌照。登记车主可获发给一个车辆牌照（行车证），并须张贴于车头挡风玻璃的左边；而无固定挡风玻璃的车辆，行车证须展示在该车左边的当眼处，并于该车前面能清楚看见。
续期：
车辆牌照可于期满前4个月内换领，申请时须填写指定表格（TD 558），连同最近3个月发出的地址证明及有关指定文件，一并交回办理。
逾期后始申请换领的车辆牌照，其有效期由牌照发出日起计；而由原有牌照届满日期起至新牌照生效日止期间必须缴交附加费，按每日加收一年应付牌费的0.33%计算。
车辆牌照会显示车辆的细节，包括以下资料：
