"This is my third time holding an exhibition in Singapore," shared Cao Xiaoqin. "The first was in 2008, when I held a solo exhibition at the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The second time was in 2014, which coincided with the Year of the Horse. Returning to the Lion City this year, again during a Year of the Horse, feels like a rare and special connection." He mentioned that since the 1980s, he has been studying themes such as warhorses, racehorses, circus horses, and polo horses, dedicating over four decades to painting horses.

Innovative "Mò Gǔ" Horse Painting Technique

In terms of artistic technique, Cao Xiaoqin has creatively developed the "Mò Gǔ " style of freehand brushwork in painting horses. He first lays out the overall momentum using wet brush techniques, then outlines the skeletal and muscular structure with simple, short strokes, and finally employs dry brushwork to sweep and scrub, enhancing the sense of strength and dynamism of the horses. The ink naturally diffuses on the rice paper, blending dryness with moisture and interplaying solid forms with empty spaces, making the galloping horses appear as though they are breaking through the paper—full of vitality yet tempered by an inner restraint.

"The Mò Gǔ technique originated in the Song Dynasty and flourished during the Qing Dynasty. It emphasizes ‘shaping from within outward,’ focusing not on outlining external contours but on using ink tones and color masses to create form and spirit," explained Cao Xiaoqin. He noted that employing the Mò Gǔ method to depict horses—accurately capturing the dynamic sense of galloping—is no easy feat, requiring long-term, repeated practice and accumulation. He also integrates the brushwork sensibilities of calligraphy into his paintings, achieving a "shared origin of painting and calligraphy," allowing his works to reveal meticulous detail within bold expressiveness and to embody traditional artistic charm amid their unrestrained vitality.
