Abstract

![]()
The construction industry plays a vital role in national economic development but faces significant challenges related to inefficiencies, limited informatization, and management fragmentation. Building Information Modeling (BIM) has emerged as a core digital technology capable of transforming construction enterprises by enhancing collaboration, reducing costs, and improving project lifecycle management. Despite growing government support and international advances, BIM adoption in China, particularly during the construction phase, remains uneven and underexplored.
This dissertation explores the complex factors that influence BIM adoption by construction enterprises during the construction phase. It employs a multi-theoretical framework integrating the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), the Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) framework, and Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) theory, and introduces Conflict of Interest (COI) to capture the socio-economic tensions that impede technology uptake. Qualitative interviews with management representatives from state-owned, large private, and specialized small firms identified skill gaps, workflow misalignments, and profit-sharing conflicts. Building on these insights, a set of research hypotheses and a comprehensive theoretical model were formulated, and a structured questionnaire was designed and administered to 264 respondents across diverse enterprise sizes and ownership types in China.
Hypotheses were tested via three structural models and mediation analyses. Of 21 proposed hypotheses, 16 were supported. Key results show that Relative Advantage (RA) and Organizational Readiness (OR) strongly enhance both Perceived Usefulness (PU) and Perceived Ease of Use (PEOU), which in turn drive Behavioral Intention (BI). Government Policies and Regulations (GPR) significantly boost PU but do not directly influence BI, indicating a gap between policy mandates and practice. Competitive Pressure (CP) directly stimulates BI without affecting PU, underscoring market competition as an independent motivator. Importantly, Conflict of Interest exerts a significant negative direct effect on BI, highlighting the need to address stakeholder benefit distribution.
This dissertation advances technology adoption theory by integrating multiple models ( TAM, TOE, and DOI) into a specific construction industry framework and introducing specific factors such as Conflict of Interest and Competitive Pressure, resulting in a validated model that captures the economic and market competition environment unique to BIM adoption. Practically, based on these findings, the dissertation provides targeted recommendations for enterprises, governments, and industry organizations to enhance BIM system ease of use and usefulness, align stakeholder incentives, and optimize benefit-sharing mechanisms, thereby accelerating BIM adoption and maximizing its value realization.
