在古代，“腊”与“蜡”都是指冬季祭神、祭祖，两字基本可以通用替代。因为祭祀选在农历十二月举行，所以称十二月为“腊（蜡）月”。自南北朝始，定十二月初八为“腊日”，这就是“腊八”的最初由来。民族传统文化浓郁的腊八节，与中医药文化也有着紧密的联系。
