International Host Wang Guoqiang Attends WWI Chinese Laborers Memorial Ceremony at Paris Arc de Triomphe
New York Comprehensive News, Paris Report On the evening of November 9, 2025 local time, just one day before the 107th anniversary of the Armistice of World War I, over 200 members of the French Chinese community gathered at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris for a solemn memorial ceremony to honor the Chinese laborers who sacrificed their lives for France during the Great War. The event was hosted by the Chinese Veterans Association of the French Foreign Legion, with co-sponsorship from organizations including the French Chinese Overseas Association, the French Qingtian Hometown Association, the France-China Chamber of Commerce, the French Wencheng Friendship Association, and the France-China Friendship Mutual Aid Association. Special support was provided by the France Love Group, aiming to preserve historical memory and promote Sino-French friendship.
Host of the Official Forum of the 69th United Nations World Women’s Conference, “Prince of Love Songs,” and renowned international host Wang Guoqiang (Prince John) made his first appearance at this profoundly meaningful ceremony upon the warm invitation of France Love Group President Dong Fengzhen. As a distinguished guest, he witnessed and participated in the event, infusing it with unique artistic and emotional resonance. As an influential international host in global society, Wang Guoqiang’s impact has long transcended borders: In the first half of this year, he held a solo concert at New York City Hall, showcasing the charm of Sino-Western musical fusion; at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and Columbia University, he hosted high-profile cultural galas, fostering deep dialogues between art and academia; in Brooklyn, he actively engaged in U.S.-China cultural exchange initiatives, bridging youth and communities across nations. Notably, New York State Senators and New York City Council members personally presented awards, commending his contributions as a cultural bridge. Furthermore, he received honors from UNESCO, the United Nations Caribbean Community Foundation, and the United Nations Global Women’s Foundation, recognizing his long-standing dedication to global cultural exchange and humanitarian care. Dubbed the “Friend of International Women,” Wang Guoqiang hosted the official forum of the 69th United Nations World Women’s Conference at UN Headquarters in the first half of this year, advocating for global gender equality and peaceful development. His international stature enables him to effortlessly share this Chinese laborers’ memorial with global peace ambassadors and UN channels, infusing the historical remembrance with a worldwide perspective and humanistic warmth, thereby amplifying its significance in Sino-French and broader international relations. Recently in Paris, Wang Guoqiang has been immersed in a series of international cultural activities, seamlessly blending his artistic journey with historical commemoration. On the afternoon of November 6, he attended the opening ceremony of the “Printemps Asiatique” (Asian Spring) exhibition at the Cernuschi Museum (Musée Cernuschi) and other cultural exchanges, advancing Sino-French artistic dialogue. The following day, November 7, he conducted a brief yet profound interview with Noodles (real name Kevin Wasserman), lead guitarist of the world-renowned punk rock band The Offspring, beneath the Eiffel Tower. This cross-cultural conversation bridged the rebellious passion of punk rock with the profound themes of Sino-French exchanges, highlighting The Offspring’s legendary status in the global music scene—as pinnacles of punk rock, their classics like “Pretty Fly (for a White Guy)” and “Come Out and Play” have become epic milestones in rock history, influencing generations of fans and cultural trends. The lingering echoes of these activities carried into his Arc de Triomphe visit on November 9, continuing the dual resonance of art and history.
As the sun set, participants in neat attire formed orderly ranks along the Champs-Élysées, marching slowly to the Arc de Triomphe accompanied by the solemn melody of a band. Wang Guoqiang, as a special guest, walked at the rear of the elite overseas Chinese delegation and ahead of the honor guard, his steady steps merging seamlessly with the procession, silently conveying reverence for history. In an interview, he shared emotionally: “Walking along the world-famous Champs-Élysées with the entire group toward the Arc de Triomphe filled me with immense pride and honor. This was more than a mere procession; it was a tribute to our forebears’ spirit. As a global landmark with traffic controls and drawing worldwide attention, it underscores the French government’s Attach importance for this event. It deeply moved me to sense that the status of overseas Chinese in France and internationally is steadily rising—from forgotten history to this solemn commemoration, we have finally taken our place on such a stage.” The ceremony began with young Chinese descendants offering wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier beneath the Arc, symbolizing the younger generation’s awe and inheritance of history. Subsequently, Chai Junyan, secretary of the Consular Department’s Overseas Chinese Affairs Section at the Chinese Embassy in France; Ding Shiding, first vice president of the French Chinese Overseas Association; Zhou Wei, president of the French Qingtian Hometown Association; Ren Jiaodan, secretary-general of the France-China Chamber of Commerce; Zhu Liangshun, president of the French Wencheng Friendship Association; Chen Chenghui, first executive vice president of the France-China Friendship Mutual Aid Association; Chen Jiahui, president of the French Chinese Youth Association; Wang Yulong, president of the Chinese Veterans Association of the French Foreign Legion; and French dignitaries offered floral baskets in turn. Amid the somber music, all attendees observed three minutes of silence to pay the highest tribute to the fallen Chinese laborers of World War I.
The ceremony reached its climax as President Wang Yulong and French five-star General Bruno Dary jointly lit the eternal flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The firelight illuminated the majestic arches of the Arc de Triomphe, symbolizing the undying hope for peace. Members of the Chinese Veterans Association of the French Foreign Legion saluted in formation, while active and retired French Navy personnel and middle school students stood solemnly in observation, creating a profoundly moving atmosphere. French dignitaries, including the mayor of the 8th arrondissement, Jean Doselle, and Senator Vincent Luau (a descendant of WWI Chinese laborers), attended in person, joining in this historic moment.
In an interview, Senator Vincent Luau, a descendant of Chinese laborers, said emotionally: “My great-grandfather came to France in 1916 and married in 1923; my grandmother was born that year. She had five children, so our family knows our history well. Though tracing roots back to Guangdong is difficult now, everyone knows this story. It is an eternal symbol of Sino-French relations and friendship. The conditions were extremely harsh; many laborers came to France with no choice and lost their lives. I believe France needs to say thank you to them.”
This event marks the second time the French Chinese community has independently held such a ceremony at the Arc de Triomphe on Armistice Day since 2023. During World War I, facing labor shortages, France and Britain signed agreements with the Chinese government to recruit approximately 140,000 Chinese laborers who crossed oceans to Europe. Though not on the front lines, they built railways, roads, bridges, trenches, and engaged in agricultural production in the rear, with over 20,000 perishing abroad. After the war, many settled in France, becoming the first generation of French Chinese and bridging Sino-French friendship. This Arc de Triomphe ceremony further expands its influence, enabling more French people to learn about this forgotten history. Wang Guoqiang’s participation adds a touch of artistic and emotional warmth; he stated that he will continue promoting the Chinese laborers’ stories through his international platforms to advance Sino-French cultural exchanges.
Following the ceremony, Wang Guoqiang reflected deeply: “This event is not merely an echo of history but a call to the future. It strengthens my belief that through bridges of culture and emotion, we can ensure more people remember our forebears’ sacrifices and ignite the eternal flame of Sino-French friendship. This experience has made me profoundly appreciate that the laborers’ contributions, though a century old, stand as enduringly as the Arc de Triomphe itself—their dedication forges who we are today, and I am truly honored and moved to participate.” He extended special thanks to France Love Group President Dong Fengzhen for her warm invitation, which allowed him to delve into the little-known contributions and sacrifices of the WWI Chinese laborers and feel this timeless warmth and strength firsthand. Wang also expressed heartfelt gratitude to all co-sponsors and participants: “Thanks to the meticulous organization by the Chinese Veterans Association of the French Foreign Legion, the enthusiastic companionship of every overseas Chinese compatriot, and the strong support from French dignitaries—we together safeguard this precious historical memory.” Founded in 2023 by elite French Chinese, the France Love Group upholds the philosophy of “Truth, Goodness, and Beauty,” dedicated to advancing Sino-French grassroots exchanges and charitable causes. Over the past two years, it has organized numerous heartwarming initiatives, including community mutual aid, women’s rights advocacy, cultural and artistic promotion, and support for Chinese laborers’ historical commemorations, earning widespread acclaim in the community. President Dong Fengzhen remarked: “Love knows no bounds; we welcome more like-minded individuals to join us in spreading positive energy and solidifying the bridge of Sino-French friendship.” This commemoration not only revives historical memory but also infuses new vitality into Sino-French people-to-people exchanges.
