生活于热带珊瑚礁海域的大印矶塘鳢Eviota sigillata是已有记录的寿命最短的脊椎动物，而胸棘鲷、阿留申平鲉Sebastes aleutianus等鱼类的寿命动辄上百年。更有甚者，小头睡鲨Somniosus microcephalus（也称格陵兰鲨、大西洋睡鲨）很可能是现存寿命最长的鱼类，它们能活约 400 年！
