About EiM

KingLead:Please would you share with us your personal story about how did you enter the education industry and participate in founding of Dulwich College International and EiM?

Dulwich College Shanghai Pudong

Ms. Karen Yung, co-founder of EiM:My passion for education really stems from wanting to create schooling experiences that fostered a love of learning.I went to school in Singapore, then a British boarding school and finally to an American university. While these diverse experiences provided me with a foundation to build environments that are inclusive and collaborative across cultures, I did not necessarily find these experiences particularly inspiring and felt restrictive at times, and so my personal journey initially drove my desire to give my children excitement in their learning journey which went beyond school.

In 1992, when my family and I moved to Hanoi, Vietnam, I was faced with the challenge of finding a suitable education for my children. Drawing on my Marie Montessori Diploma and my research into early childhood development, I established my own preschool in Hanoi. As an expat in a newly opening nation with limited international schooling options, I understood the importance of providing children with a holistic education that would help them thrive in a rapidly changing world.

In 1997, when Fraser and I relocated to Shanghai with our three children, we encountered a similar challenge. Driven by our pioneering spirit and my personal commitment to providing our children with an exceptional education, together, we took a bold risk by opening the first Dulwich College in Shanghai, Pudong. Even though Pudong was little more than light industry factories across the Pearl River, we were determined to create a world-class school that would inspire children to love learning.

As our network of Dulwich Colleges across China grew over the years, my motivation shifted from a focus on my own children to a desire to create environments in which all children could thrive. I am passionate about building schools that not only provide children with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed through their own unique, chosen pathways, but also to foster creativity, critical thinking and a love of learning that will stay with them for life.

Through the establishment and of evolution of EiM, the parent organisation for Dulwich College International, we have continued to strive to create transformative learning experiences in developing programmes and approaches to learning that empowers student agency. Adding to our family of schools, such as the Green School in Bali, and Hochalpines Institut Ftan AG (HIF) in Switzerland we bring a different dimension to who we are.

I'm also incredibly fortunate to come from a family with a strong legacy of pioneering education. My great-grandfather, Yung Wing, left a significant impact on the field. As an educator and a diplomat, he achieved a groundbreaking milestone as the first Chinese person to graduate from an American university, Yale University in 1858. Inspired by and determined to share his experience at Yale with other Chinese students, he then undertook a lifelong crusade to provide young men from his country with a chance to experience international education. In 1872 he founded what came to be known as the Chinese Educational Mission. Over a decade, 120 Chinese boys and young men sponsored by the Chinese government were sent to the United States to be educated not only in universities like Yale and MIT, but in grammar and secondary schools like Phillips Exeter as well. These alumni returned home to become leaders in fields such as engineering, diplomacy, and academia, including Zhan Tianyou, known as “the father of China’s railroads,” and Tang Guo’an, the first president of Tsinghua College, forerunner of prestigious Tsinghua University. My great-grandfather’s pioneering spirit and lasting legacy have inspired me personally to innovate, rise to challenges, push boundaries and collaborate with others in changing the world through education.

KingLead:Please introduce the mission, vision, and core values for Education in Motion (EiM)?

Ms. Karen Yung, co-founder of EiM:Our mission and vision have always been to make a real difference in the world. This has been our focus since we first founded Dulwich College International, and it remains at the heart of everything we do - including through the establishment and evolution of EiM. At our core, we believe that it is our responsibility, as educators, is to instil the values through the students’ learning journey, what it means to be a global citizen caring for the planet. A truly world class education is socially and emotionally enriching, academically rigorous, safe and holistic where values are embedded into the DNA of a student.

We want to nurture young people who are equipped with the skills and passion to create positive change in the world. Our vision is a world where our students are driven by intrinsic motivation and a deep sense of purpose, using their education to make a meaningful impact. To achieve this, we are committed to creating a learning ecosystem that offers our students the opportunities they need to broaden their global, social, and sustainable literacy - so they can truly understand their place in the world and make valuable contributions, no matter where their journey takes them.

KingLead:As a leading international education group with a global presence, how does EiM achieve big successes in countries with various cultural backgrounds and educational systems?

Ms. Karen Yung, co-founder of EiM:As part of an expat family myself for many years, we have always deeply valued and drawn from the rich variety of cultural backgrounds and educational systems of the countries in which we have lived in. This has translated to the countries we operate in as an educational institution. We recognise the significance of respecting, understanding, and adapting to local culture while fostering an international mindset and nurturing global citizens.

Dulwich College Shanghai Puxi

To achieve this, we leverage the unique features of each region, and our portfolio includes a range of schools that cater to the needs of diverse families. With over 11,000 students hailing from 60 countries, Education Motion (EiM), aims to create a learning ecosystem where students can broaden and enhance their global, social and sustainable literacy to make a positive difference in the world. Our commitment to sustainability and global citizenship is at the core of our mission and is woven into the fabric of our organisation. We believe that our students are the future and have the potential to create a positive impact on society and the environment.

We’ve also prioritised building strong partnerships and collaborations with global and local organisations. For example, our long-time partner, the Royal Shakespeare Company, introduces our students to the fantastic world of drama, and our partnership with Yuyin Society showcases traditional Chinese art to our students. These collaborations allow us to work closely with communities to promote cultural exchange and mutual understanding. To ensure that our education is both culturally sensitive and globally relevant, we place emphasis on the recruitment and development of a diverse team of educators and staff, who bring a wide range of perspectives and experiences to their work.

KingLead:EiM Group owns a diversified brand portfolio including Dulwich College International, Dulwich International High School, Green School, and others. What concepts and goals does each of them have in common so they can form such a sustainable effect in the world?

Ms. Karen Yung, co-founder of EiM:Our EiM schools share a strong commitment to the sustainability & global citizenship agenda. We understand that as an education group, we have a responsibility to be a part of the solution to the social and environmental challenges facing our planet today. Our approach is rooted in the belief this is not just the responsibility of a few, but a shared commitment that must be championed in every area of expertise. We certainly need environmentalists, but we also need scientists, businesspeople, artists, and entrepreneurs who can champion the planet’s cause in their respective areas.

Our commitment to sustainability and global citizenship is at the core of our mission and is woven into the fabric of our organisation. We believe that our students are the future and have the potential to create a positive impact on society and the environment. To achieve this, we champion global citizenship across our schools, and provide purpose-driven learning experiences that are guided by a deep sense of connection to people and the planet. As a group, we are dedicated to developing, measuring, and maintaining sustainable practices that align with our four pillars of Learning, Planet, People, and Policy, having launched our second industry leading ESG report this year. We’re really pleased to see that our ESG report and vision have been a catalyst for conversation and action, accelerating our already wide-ranging efforts across the organisation. Through our efforts, we hope to inspire our students and communities to adopt a lifelong commitment to sustainability and global citizenship, creating a brighter future for generations to come.

Green School Bali

KingLead:Dulwich is the first British independent school to take its practices and ethos internationally to China in 2003. How has Dulwich since developed around the world?

Ms. Karen Yung, co-founder of EiM:It's fascinating to reflect on the last 20 years since we established Dulwich College International in China. It's remarkable to witness the changes that have taken place in China and around the world, as well as the growth of our schools. Our journey began in 2003 with the opening of Dulwich College Shanghai Pudong, and today our EiM family of schools include 6 Dulwich Colleges, 2 Dulwich High Schools, 3 Dehong International bilingual schools (sister schools), Green School and Holchapines Institut Ftan (HIF) in 5 countries – China, Singapore, Korea, Switzerland and Indonesia.

Dulwich College in London is our founding school. Dulwich College’s vision is “to be an outstanding school inculcating in every pupil an aptitude for work, study and a sense of service so they have the potential to make a positive difference in the world”. We have built on the strength of this vision and brought a sharp focus on driving excellence in all that we do and our pioneering spirit brings a “dare to do” attitude across all of our schools to prepare students for life after school.

Three pillars underpin everything we do: Firstly, our students come first. We prioritise their needs, talents, and well-being in all aspects of our learning environments. We make every decision with their best interests in mind, so they can reach their full potential. Secondly, we consider ourselves one family of schools. Our community of schools provides an international education where students have access to unparalleled resources and learning experiences. By fostering a sense of belonging and support, our students feel comfortable and confident to explore new ideas and perspectives. Lastly, we believe in a pioneering spirit. We strive for continuous improvement and innovation to provide an education that equips our students with transferable skills, enabling them to thrive in a rapidly changing world and “Live Worldwise”. This commitment to innovation is at the heart of what we do, and in our mission to future-proof our students to equip them with the skills and knowledge required to excel on the global stage.

KingLead:Based on your understanding of the education industry in the globe, how do you think and plan the future development of EiM in China and globally?

Ms. Karen Yung, co-founder of EiM:Through our extensive research conducted in 10 markets, we have found a growing demand for parents to prioritise the development of problem solvers, independent thinkers, passionate explorers, and responsible global citizens who contribute to the wider community. This has influenced their expectations on their child’s schooling and their expectations of what they want to achieve. For them, a good education inculcates values and a sense of purpose, while success is beyond academics, but is achieved by finding one’s passion and making an impact on society. This is why we will continue to develop and create educational experiences that focus on a holistic curriculum and developing the whole child.

KingLead:What challenges have you encountered since the establishment of first Dulwich school? How were these challenges addressed?

Ms. Karen Yung, co-founder of EiM:The big surprise was that having the best facilities and bringing a group of teachers together with excellent qualifications doesn’t guarantee a good school! I learnt very quickly the importance of:

1、Leadership to develop a strong culture

2、Pedagogy

3、Communication

4、Understanding the community and the number of stakeholders

5、Processes and systems – use of data for decision making

6、Clear roles and responsibilities and accountabilities

There is a lot more in managing schools but if you put the above together, you can drive consistency in delivering excellence as you scale.

KingLead:We’ve noticed that EiM is committed to innovating in education for a sustainable future. From your perspective, what should international schools in China do to develop their brands in a better way?

Ms. Karen Yung, co-founder of EiM:It’s never about the brand or which country you are in. Whether you are a local school, an international school, a private or a public school. If you are a school, you have the responsibility to educate the student to be the best version of themselves. You know that our mantra is “Students Come First”. We invest in high quality teachers, innovative teaching methods and curriculum, good facilities, and diverse extracurricular activities to provide our students with a world-class education. Building a strong network of partnerships with other institutions and organisations is important for schools. These partnerships can provide access to new resources, expertise, and opportunities to improve educational offerings.

We believe in the importance of innovation in education, which is why we have made it a cornerstone of our philosophy. This commitment to innovation not only helps us to maintain our leading position in the education sector, but also allows us to continuously improve and enhance the learning experience for our students. This includes a willingness to actively seek out and embrace new and better approaches to education, as well as a dedication to being flexible and adaptable in the classroom. We also believe in pioneering industry leadership, which means that we are constantly pushing the boundaries of what is possible in education, and setting new standards for excellence.

KingLead:What do you think are the key factors of Innovation in Education?

Ms. Karen Yung, co-founder of EiM:A few factors come to mind:

Technology:We’re dedicated to ensuring that our students are well-equipped with the knowledge and skills required to navigate a technology-driven world and make meaningful contributions to society, with STEAM programmes such as CreaTech, which focuses on creativity and technology, propelled by new and exciting digital media learning opportunities.

Innovative Curriculum:Developing a dynamic and innovative curriculum is necessary to meet the needs of today's learners. We believe in personalised learning, project-based learning, interdisciplinary learning, and experiential learning, all of which enable students to take ownership of their education and foster their creativity and critical thinking skills.

Professional Development:Teachers are key drivers of innovation in education. Providing teachers with continuous professional development opportunities is crucial to ensure they remain up-to-date with the latest trends and teaching approaches. We invest in our teachers' professional development through our awarded Accelerate program and the annual Groupwide Professional Day.

Collaborative Learning:Collaboration among teachers, staff, and stakeholders is crucial for driving innovation in education. Collaborative efforts allow for the exchange of best practices, the development of new teaching methods, and the creation of a supportive learning environment.

Student-Centered Approach:We believe in a student-centered approach to learning that prioritizes individual needs and interests. Personalised learning plans, flexible learning environments, and the use of technology to support individualised learning are some of the ways we ensure that our students receive a tailored education that meets their unique needs. By adopting this approach, we foster student engagement, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of learning. With the help of our university counselling teams, our alumni therefore choose diverse paths that are most suited to their passions and interests – in the arts, sciences, business, sustainability, education and more – and go on to attend universities that are not just highly ranked, but are also aligned with their individual pathways.

KingLead:EiM recently received an award from LinkedIn for Global Attractive Employer. Can you share your company values and philosophy?

Ms. Karen Yung, co-founder of EiM:Our company values and philosophy are centered around lifelong learning, innovation in education, sustainability, global citizenship, and wellbeing and support. We are building a culture of true collaboration across all our schools, functions, and teams and as a world-leading international education group, we believe in empowering our educators to shape and adapt their curriculum content, bringing creativity to the classroom and fostering new approaches to education. Our teachers and staff are at the heart of everything we do, as they are shaping a generation of global citizens, and that’s why we put our teachers and staff’s interests at the forefront of every decision we make.

KingLead:What practical activities and measures does EiM implement in cultivating innovative talents?

Ms. Karen Yung, co-founder of EiM:In terms of cultivating innovative teachers and staff, we believe in a two-pronged approach that involves both encouraging innovation through appropriate recognition, as well as supporting innovators with adequate learning opportunities. In pursuit of this goal, we have established the Pioneering Spirit Grant, which seeks to cultivate a culture of innovation among both students and teachers. This grant goes beyond just providing financial support, as it aims to champion innovation with a focus on sustainability. Additionally, we have developed a robust professional learning provision and platform, including the award-winning Accelerate leadership programme, which provides professional learning, training, and support for our leaders. This programme is designed to empower our leaders to actively foster an environment of creativity and innovation within their teams.

KingLead:What specific resources does EiM provide to cultivate students' innovative capabilities?

Ms. Karen Yung, co-founder of EiM:EiM draws strength from our founding school’s history of philanthropy, pioneering spirit and innovation. As a family of schools, we have established a global reputation as leaders in evidence based educational initiatives that are proven to increase student achievement and wellbeing. Dulwich College in London has remained agile and relevant over four centuries, our schools are guided by reliable research findings that have helped keep the EiM family of schools at the forefront of best educational practice.

Dulwich College Beijing

As mentioned previously, the Pioneering Spirit Grant allows the promotion, fostering, and recognition of student entrepreneurship and innovative teaching practices to inspire and nurture the next generation of innovators. We also have introduced the SE21 programme at our Dulwich schools and sister schools, Dehong International. “S” stands for STEAM - Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Maths, “E” Entrepreneurship and Environmental Sustainability and “21” stands for. 21st Century Skills in our Approaches to Learning (ATL) Framework. “SE21” is also a reference to our founding Dulwich College which sits in the SE21 London postcode. SE21 is both physical spaces (SE21 Hubs) in schools, and a learning programme that is offered in different forms inside and outside the curriculum. Our SE21 hubs provide opportunities for pitching ideas, robotics, coding, CAD/CAM, graphic design, film, digital, and virtual reality learning experiences.

KingLead:What is EiM’s approach to sustainability and global citizenship?

Ms. Karen Yung, co-founder of EiM:Sustainability and Global Citizenship are infused and embedded across our whole organisation. Our goal is to encourage our school communities to make informed choices, take inspired action and create positive impact. At schools, we also have Sustainability & Global Citizenship leads that advocate for such initiatives within their communities.

Dulwich College Suzhou

One of the ways we achieve this is through our School Progress Indicators as well as Global Citizenship Competencies, covering the areas of Service, Environmental Sustainability, Intercultural Understanding, Diversity and Social Justice. We invite schools to set their personalised and customised progress indicators and global competencies, to ensure that they are as relevant and as authentic as possible. It’s great to see that our students are actually leading the way in this area, often coming up with new ideas and initiatives when it comes to sustainability related projects or ideas relating to inclusivity. Many alumni, driven by their passion for sustainability, have embarked on diverse paths that contribute to creating a sustainable future. They have pursued careers directly aligned with sustainability, integrated sustainability principles into their respective fields, and actively championed environmental advocacy, propelling forward innovative solutions.

Future Development

KingLead:Today, international schools are booming in China. How do you perceive the mission, vision, value proposition, and goals of cultivating innovative talents of international schools in China?

Ms. Karen Yung, co-founder of EiM:I think international schools in China present a unique opportunity to cultivate innovative talents among students. The mission of these schools should be to provide a holistic education that emphasises not only academic excellence but also the development of critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills. The vision should be to produce graduates who are well-rounded, global citizens equipped with the knowledge and skills to navigate the complexities of the modern world. The value proposition of international schools in China lies in their ability to provide a multicultural and bilingual learning environment, which prepares students for the global workforce. These schools should leverage their international faculty and diverse student body to provide a rich and stimulating learning experience.

KingLead:The epidemic has had a huge impact on international education, what challenges and opportunities do you think international schools will face in the post-epidemic era?

Ms. Karen Yung, co-founder of EiM:A challenge that international schools will face is the need to adapt to the changing demands of the global education market. With the rise of online learning and the increasing demand for personalised, student-centered education, international schools must be able to offer innovative and flexible learning solutions that meet the needs of diverse student populations.

Broadly, recruitment of high-quality expat teachers post-epidemic is one of the big challenges that international schools face in China. As the borders reopen, we are pleased to see an increase in the enthusiasm of international teachers towards China, which brings great optimism to the recruitment process of high-quality expat teachers for international schools. We have demonstrated during the epidemic that EiM looks after their staff so when we are recruiting into China for any of our schools, our reputation has helped us in securing top talents.

The post-epidemic era also presents new opportunities for international schools to innovate and grow. The pandemic has accelerated the evolution of technology in education and opportunities to use it to collaborate with a greater network.

Holchapines Institut Ftan (HIF)

Additionally, the pandemic has increased global awareness of the importance of collaboration and cooperation between countries. This presents an opportunity for international schools to build new partnerships and collaborations, and to contribute to the development of a more interconnected and globally-minded society. Our Ignite: Switzerland programme, launched this January, is an example of that – it’s a unique overseas residential experience in Switzerland at Hochalpines Institut Ftan, which is an EiM school and a sister school to Dulwich, available to students from our schools in Asia, and encourages collaboration between EiM schools and between students from different countries and cultures.
