盛唐诗人王昌龄以 “七绝圣手” 之名垂范诗史。世人多称颂其边塞诗慷慨雄浑，却常忽视他在送别、闺怨、宫怨题材上登峰造极的笔墨。王昌龄诗作大致分为边塞、闺怨、羁旅赠别三大门类，每一类皆流传千古的巅峰佳作。写宫闺幽怨，他是盛唐最擅描摹深宫女子心事的诗人，情思幽深、写景灵妙、比兴贴切、造语新奇，独步一时，明代王世贞直言盛唐七绝唯有王昌龄可与李白并列，同入“神品”；杨慎亦评“龙标绝句无一篇不佳”。
其送别诗存五十二首，约占存世诗作四分之一。融万般离愁于山水风物间：既有 “一片冰心在玉壶” 不染尘俗的君子气节，有 “青山一道同云雨”跨越山海的豁达情谊，亦有 “寂寂寒江明月心” 绵长清冷的缱绻思念，拓开盛唐送别诗全新审美境界。
