“看手机”不要说成watch your phone

如果需要翻译“看手机”这个动作，你第一时间想到的会是什么？有同学写了这么一个句子：

Many peoplewatch their phoneswhile walking, which is a bad habit.

一些同学会像上面一样，把“看手机”翻译成watch your phone，但这样写往往会引起误解，因为这个短语真正的意思是“看好你的手机”。

要理解这一点，我们需要真正弄懂watch的含义。《剑桥词典》对于单词的解释是：

To look at something for a period of time, especially something that is changing or moving

也就是说，watch指的是长时间、专注地注视某动态事物。比如watch a football match（看足球比赛），这里“足球比赛”就是一个动态发展的事物。

又比如watch the sunset（看日落），这里太阳下山也是一个动态的过程。

回到watch your phone这一搭配，它的字面意思是“长时间盯着手机这一物体看（以留意它接下来发生的变化）”，在实际使用时指的是“看好你的手机”。

比如国外的旅游网站在给游客防偷建议时，会有watch your phone这样的提示：

又比如海外论坛Reddit上面有人提了一个问题：Does "I'm watching my phone" sound natural?

下面的老外这样回答：

"Watching" sounds a bit unnatural here if you don't clarify. For example, "I'm watching something on my phone." As others mentioned, "watching your phone" in this context almost sounds as if you are looking at it indirectly, say guarding it from being stolen.

也就是说，watch your phone指的是“看好你的手机”，而不是“看手机”。

有同学可能会问，那“看电视”为什么可以说watch television？

因为在这里television并不是表示“电视机”，而是表示“电视节目”（programs that are broadcast by television），watch television指的是“长时间观看动态变化的电视节目”。它的逻辑跟watch your phone不同。

虽然“看手机”不能说watch our phone，但我们可以说watch movies/videos on our phone，因为电影和视频是动态变化的。

要表达“看手机”，常见的说法是look at your phone。比如纽约时报就有这么一个标题：

If You Look at Your Phone While Walking, You're an Agent of Chaos

如果你走路时还看手机，你就是一个“混乱制造者”

如果要表达“短暂看一下手机”，比如看一眼有没有消息或者看一下时间，那么可以用check。比如国外有一篇文章标题是：

How to stop checking your phone every five minutes

如何改掉每隔五分钟就看一次手机的习惯

如果要表达“专注看手机”，可以说somebody is glued to their phone，其中glue本义是“胶水”，be glued to something引申为“目不转睛看某事物”。

另外，一些人会把“玩手机”翻译成play your phone，这也是不对的，因为play后面一般跟游戏、乐器以及球类运动搭配，不跟电子产品搭配。

Play with your phone也不对，因为它的意思类似于像儿童玩玩具一样把手机翻来翻去摆弄，而不是“玩手机里面的各种app”。

“玩手机”的地道表达是scroll on/through your phone，如果要表达“刷社交媒体”，则可以说scroll on/through social media。
