In 2005, 1800 million tonnes of waste were buried underground, making landfillingthe predominant disposal method.In contrast, incineration treated just 500 million tonnes of waste,slightly less thanocean dumping, which handled 600 million tonnes.

In the subsequent years, land burialunderwent a consistent decline, dropping sharply to600 million tonnes in 2008.Conversely, the amount of waste treated through burningalmost doubled, reaching900 million tonnes by 2008.This increase allowed incineration tosurpassthe other two options, making itthe most widely used disposal methodby the end of the period.In addition,despitea minor rise to650 million tonnes in 2006,there was a gradual decrease inthe figure for marine discharge to 550 million tonnes in 2008, making itthe least utilized choice.
