After K9 (see our previous posts for K9's story) reached a previously unknown breeding site in early June 2024, our Russian team, guided by the data from K9’s satellite tag, successfully visited this remote montane habitat earlier this month. The site lies deep in northeast Russia and had never been surveyed before. Using a habitat suitability model developed by the Spoon-billed Sandpiper Task Force and based on K9’s tracking data, the team was able to focus their search.
And what a discovery it led to! The Russian team found not just one, but nine chicks in three broods! This is a remarkable example of how targeted science, collaboration, and a single bird’s journey can open the door to new conservation opportunities.
We are now working on refining the model to help guide broader surveys in the coming seasons, assess possible threats, and support long-term conservation planning in the region.
K9 has already exceeded all expectations – and is still teaching us more.
