The global trade environment is becoming increasingly complex. Major stock indexes have been mixed these days in turbulent trading dominated by concerns over the U.S. President Donald Trump's import tariffs. In contrast, Cai Tongjuan, Director of the Macro Research Department and Research Fellow of the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies (RDCY), said that China is committed to development through high-level opening up, demonstrating its unique institutional strengths.
In a recent interview with China Youth Daily, Cai explained that autonomous opening up promotes domestic reform and enhances economic resilience. China's high-level opening up has encouraged the country to deepen reforms, optimize the business environment and enhance market competitiveness. By lowering tariffs, easing market access and other measures, China has helped domestic enterprises catch up with the international community and strengthened their ability to cope with external shocks.
Cai also noted that in an open environment, domestic enterprises face more intense international competition, which has prompted them to increase investment in research and development, enhance their technological innovation capabilities, promote industrial upgrading, and contribute to high-quality development.

China has strengthened the multilateral trading system and promoted the fair development of the world economy. "By granting zero-tariff treatment to the least developed countries, China has demonstrated its commitment to global economic fairness, which will help narrow the gap between developing and developed countries and promote a fairer and more reasonable global economic order," Cai added.
More importantly, the unilateral opening up policy strengthens international cooperation and increases global influence. Since 2023, China has implemented a policy of unilateral opening up, including measures such as visa-free entry to many countries and easing restrictions on foreign investment. Cai said that China's proactive and open stance not only increases China's influence in global trade, but also provides new opportunities to reshape the global trade landscape.
