2022 Ningbo International Cultural Exchange Base Sharing Forum held at UNNC
On 22nd July, the 2022 Ningbo International Cultural Exchange Base Sharing Forum was held at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC). A total of 25 first batch Ningbo International Cultural Exchange Bases, including UNNC, were awarded plaque at the forum, with the UNNC also awarded the title of Zhejiang International Cultural Exchange Base. At the meeting, representatives of 13 outstanding bases shared their experience and achievements in the construction of international cultural exchange bases.
Professor Gary Rawnsley, Dean of UNNC‘s the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, shared some insights on the construction of international cultural exchange bases at the meeting. He pointed out that cultural exchange begins with active listening, understanding why people disagree with you, and then finding a common space to move forward. He also mentioned the importance of digital platforms, from which one can collect people’s opinions and perspectives and thus realizing the power and potential of cultural exchange.
As a role model for Sino-British educational collaboration, UNNC boasts a future-oriented teaching system and upholds the concept of helping society to prosper with high-quality sustainable development. It has attracted staff and students from more than 70 countries and regions around the world. Here they visit China, learn about Chinese culture, and become ambassadors of Chinese culture.
Since its establishment, the university has always adhered to the principles of “going global" and "bringing in”. “Going global” allows domestic students to go abroad and tell their Chinese story to the world, while “bringing in” provides students with high-quality international education and gives international staff and students the opportunities to explore Chinese culture.
In terms of "going global", UNNC has built a bridge connecting China and the world through providing a wide range of international extracurricular activities and establishing international volunteer bases. For example, UNNC has successfully held a number of international exchange activities in various countries and regions including Russia, Ukraine, Romania, Turkey, Morocco, Malaysia, Indonesia and other countries along the "Belt and Road". Numerous UNNC students have participated in these cultural exchange volunteering activities overseas, helping to spread traditional Chinese culture all around the world.
With regards to "bringing in", UNNC has not only introduced foreign high-quality educational resources within its international environment, but also enabled international talents in various fields to enter China, understand China, and serve China's social and economic construction. Over the past two years, for instance, UNNC has held various culture exchange activities for international staff and students that have remained in China due to the pandemic.
In the future, UNNC will further improve its quality as an International Cultural Exchange base by enhancing the cultural exchange of its Chinese-international staff and student, deepening theoretical research on the cultivation of international talents, cultivating Generation Z, and establishing effective publicity platforms.
Dr Jenny Dong, Deputy Party Secretary of UNNC, said: “Using UNNC as a powerful platform, we hope to let more international students and staff know about Ningbo and China, and pass on what they feel, think, and understand to the world. Meanwhile, we also hope that with the help of this platform, domestic students and staff can embrace the world and convey the Chinese voice to the world.”
