It is more important for school children to learn about local history than world history. Do you agree or disagree?

Most school students nowadays are required to learn History as part of their studies, yet there still has been a debate over the content of this subject. Personally, I consider itshort-sightedthat greater significance should be attached to local history rather than world history.

It is understandable that so many people think learning local history is more important. This is mainly because itfacilitatesyoungsterstoshape a strong sense ofnational identity. Such is human nature that people tend togravitate tonovelty, so it is a commonplace that individuals, especially youngsters, are more likely to be attracted by exotic cultures instead of domestic ones that are often regarded as clichéd. Naturally, the influences of their own cultures will beundermined. To avoid local cultures fromwithering away, history about their motherland ought to be emphasised on schoolsyllabuses, as history is closely bound up with the cultural legacies which allow students to build cultural confidence of their own nation.
