1982年5月21日，中国男子羽毛球队，在英国伦敦举行的第12届国际羽毛球团体锦标赛决赛上，战胜印度尼西亚队首次获得汤姆斯杯。
汤姆斯杯羽毛球赛，是世界上最高水平的男子羽毛球团体赛，即世界男子羽毛球团体锦标赛，由原国际羽联创办于1948年，每两年举办一次。
