First China-led ISO international tourism standard brings China's experience...

According to the official website of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People's Republic of China (MCT), the MCT held a press conference on December 5 to launch the international standard "Tourism and related services – Tourist information services – Requirements and recommendations" (ISO 14785:2024). This is the first China-led International Organization for Standardization (ISO) international tourism standard, which will bring China's experience to the high-quality development of the tourism industry.

ISO is the world's largest and most comprehensive international standards organization. Li Yubing, Deputy Director-General of the Standards Innovative Management Department of the State Administration for Market Regulation, introduced in the press conference that ISO established ISO/TC 228 in 2005, a committee responsible for tourism and related services. In November 2021, China officially submitted the project to ISO. After three years of development, the standard was approved by the vote of all ISO member countries and was released as scheduled on November 13 this year.

Focusing on multiple scenarios and aspects of tourism information consulting services, the standard innovatively put forward six main elements, including the main content of tourism information consulting services, work requirements, destination promotion, service personnel, infrastructure, and management of suggestions and complaints. Meanwhile, the standard revised the relevant 2014 Spain-led international standard to achieve significant improvements in three aspects. It expanded the scope of the standard, enriched the service content and added requirements for online tourism consultation services.

It's reported that Spain, the UK, and South Africa have already adopted the standard, showing its strong applicability. Li pointed out that if more countries adopt the standard, tourists will enjoy unified and standardized information consultation services and improve their tourism experience and satisfaction.
