【人民公园英语角】Double Ninth Festival

The Double Ninth Festival, also known as Chongyang Festival, is held on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month. It is also known as the Senior Citizens’ Festival.

During the Tang Dynasty, inserting Zhuyu on the Chongyang Festival became popular. Ancient people believed that inserting Zhuyu helped avoid disasters. And women stuck chrysanthemum in their hair or hung branches on windows and doors to ward off evil.

The traditional Chinese festival of caring for the elderly will be celebrated on October 4 this year. It is called Chongyang Festival in China. According to the Chinese calendar, this festival is celebrated every year on the ninth day of the ninth moon. According to the Chinese people, nine is the greatest number, which means longevity. People on this day wish the elderly for their health and long life.

今年10月4日是中国传统的养老节。它在中国被称为重阳节。根据中国历法，这个节日在每年的九月初九庆祝。按照中国人的说法，九是最大的数字，意味着长寿。人们在这一天祝愿老人身体健康，长寿。

Chongyang Cake is a kind of steamed cake having two layers with nuts and jujube sandwiched between them. Since cake in Chinese is pronounced 'gao' meaning high, people consider climbing a high mountain to be the same as eating cake. Also personal progress is thought to be made in the following days after eating the cake, for 'high' means that one makes improvements moving to a higher level.

重阳糕是一种蒸糕，有两层，中间夹着坚果和枣。由于蛋糕在中文中的发音是“高”，因此人们认为爬高山与吃蛋糕是一样的。人们也认为在吃完蛋糕后的几天里会取得个人进步，因为“高”意味着进步会更高。

I doubt the senior citizens’ festival will bring much joy to the rural elderly. A report by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences highlights the severity of the ageing problem in rural China. Not only do those aged 60 and above make up more than 20 per cent of the rural population, but the proportion aged 65 and above has reached 16.57 per cent, exceeding the “ageing society” level and only 3.43 percentage points away from a “super-ageing society”.

我怀疑老年节会给农村老人带来多少欢乐。中国社会科学院的一份报告强调了中国农村老龄化问题的严重性。不仅60岁及以上人口占农村人口的20%以上，而且65岁及以上人口比例达到16.57%，超过“老龄化社会”水平，距离“超”仅3.43个百分点——老龄化社会”。

The biggest question is: who is going to care for these people, among the poorest in China? Traditionally, Chinese people expect their children to care for them in old age. But these days, most able-bodied villagers venture out to urban areas to find work.

最大的问题是：在中国最贫困的人群中，谁来照顾这些人？传统上，中国人希望他们的孩子在晚年照顾他们。但如今，大多数身强力壮的村民都冒险到市区寻找工作。

W hilst the Chinese participants may traditionally view staying in their family homes as the ideal scenario, there is an increasing willingness to positively accept relocating to care homes. This is not merely as a means of minimizing loneliness and/or emptiness in the family home, and avoiding potential conflicts with family members,Footnote1 but also as a way of avoiding being a burden to their adult children which may give rise to psychological distress with feelings of guilt and shame. The Chinese participants also viewed it as a means of maintaining family harmony. All these factors may stimulate positive emotions, albeit in different ways and to varying degrees.

虽然中国参与者可能传统上认为留在家中是理想的情况，但越来越愿意积极接受搬迁到养老院。这不仅仅是为了减少家庭中的孤独感和/或空虚感，并避免与家人发生潜在冲突，脚注1也是一种避免成为成年子女负担的方式，这可能会导致内疚和羞耻感的心理困扰。中国参与者也将其视为维持家庭和谐的一种手段。所有这些因素都可能激发积极的情绪，尽管方式不同，程度也不同。

In some cases, it’s even worse
