宁波诺丁汉大学助力“宁波&诺丁汉城市生活艺术展”在甬成功举办

UNNC co-organises “Ningbo-Nottingham City Life Art Exhibition”.

不久前，“宁波&诺丁汉城市生活艺术展”在宁波市城市展览馆拉开帷幕，展览通过图文、视频和数字技术，从风光、历史、产业、人文等多维度立体对比呈现两市风貌，吸引众多市民前往参观、浏览。

宁波诺丁汉大学作为协办方，不仅推动了该展览的成功举办，学校的英伟达混合现实联合实验室还为该展提供数字技术的加持。

■宁波与诺丁汉的友谊已然持续20多年。宁波诺丁汉大学作为两市友谊的桥梁，在推动两市友好交流与合作上发挥着重要作用。2020年，在两市缔结友好关系15周年之际，宁波诺丁汉大学举行了15周年系列活动启动会暨院校共建学术交流基地揭牌仪式。本次城市生活艺术展的成功举办也离不开宁波诺丁汉大学的推动与支持。

本次展览绚丽多彩的呈现得益于数字技术的加持，如英国玩家亲手制作的游戏人物微缩模型；代表英国音乐文化的Carolan guitar；英国传统食物海绵蛋糕、黄油和烤吐司等可交互3D模型展示。而这正是源于由宁波诺丁汉大学人文社科学院国际传播系的文化与计算机学教授庄以仁（Professor Eugene Ch'ng）带领的英伟达混合现实联合实验室以及由英国诺丁汉大学Professor Steve Benford带领的英国诺丁汉大学混合现实实验室（Mixed Reality Lab）团队进行技术开发和数字内容策展。

庄教授表示此次展出也是英国艺术与人文研究理事会(AHRC)的“塑造互联博物馆”项目的一部分：“几个月来，我们一直在紧锣密鼓地筹备着，与英国诺丁汉大学团队、宁波市外办、宁波市城展馆共商展出内容。目的也是为了促进两市的艺术和文化交流，以发展更紧密的贸易、教育和文化联系。”

据庄教授介绍，他及其团队参与的“塑造互联博物馆”项目旨在通过采用虚拟现实、增强现实和混合现实等数字技术，在博物馆和美术馆的参观者、展览、场地和演绎方式之间建立新的联系。而本次展览正是运用了数字技术对部分展品进行虚拟还原，为参观者提供更好的参观体验。

在展览开幕式上，宁波诺丁汉大学首席财务和规划官马天（Thomas Murphy）在致辞中也提到：“今年是中英建立大使级外交关系50周年，宁波和诺丁汉姐妹城市之间的交流和互动也见证了两国关系的发展。我认为这次展览是我们两座城市贸易、教育和文化联系的重要里程碑。”

据了解，今年9月，英伟达混合现实联合实验室团队计划在该展的基础上在宁波市城展馆举办文化遗产可持续保护电子化与数字化论坛，并与英国相关团队进行连线与互动。此外，本次展览的展品在宁波展出结束后还将被运送到英国诺丁汉，并在当地进行展出，让更多的英国人了解宁波，了解中国。

UNNC co-organises “Ningbo-Nottingham City Life Art Exhibition”

The “Ningbo-Nottingham City Life Art Exhibition”, co-organised by the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC), was launched recently at the Ningbo City Exhibition Hall. The exhibition used a collection of digital media, video displays and interactive technology to present a multi-dimensional comparison of the two sister cities – Ningbo and Nottingham with a unique angle that establishes the differences between their landscapes, histories, culture and industries.

The art and culture exhibition is a grand example of the friendship between Ningbo and Nottingham city, which has sustained a thriving relationship for more than 20 years. As the bridge of friendship between the two cities, UNNC has continually played a critical role in promoting the blossoming cooperation between the two cities.

Within the Ningbo City Exhibition Hall were displayed a wide range of media. They include interactive digital twins of 3D models such as the traditional British sponge cake, a guitar inspired by Turlough O’Carolan, as well as miniature models of gaming characters that are products of Nottingham’s industrial revolution. These interactive displays are a glimpse of the impressive virtual technologies developed between the NVIDA-Joint Lab on Mixed Reality, led by Professor Eugene Ch’ng from UNNC’s School of International Communications of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the Mixed Reality Lab at the University of Nottingham (UoN), led by Professor Steve Benford.

On the success of the exhibition, Professor Eugene Ch’ng added that, “The exhibition is a part of the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) supported project ‘Shaping the Connected Museums’, led by UoN and UNNC.” The exhibition had been in preparation for months and was a team effort between the University of Nottingham, the Foreign Affairs Office of Ningbo Municipal People’s Government and Ningbo City Gallery.

Professor Ch’ng continued, “The vision of the AHRC ‘Shaping the Connected Museums’ project is to extend the reach and access of art and cultural heritage, by broadening its audiences through the adoption of digital technologies developed at UNNC and UoN, such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality to establish new modes of connection between visitors, exhibits, sites, and interpretations.”

In his speech at the opening of the exhibition, Thomas Murphy, Chief Financial and Planning Officer of UNNC stated, “The year of 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of ambassadorial diplomatic relations between China and the UK. In reflecting the communications and interactions between the sister cities of Ningbo and Nottingham as part of the relationship between the two countries, this exhibition is an important milestone for our trade, education and cultural ties.”

In September this year, UNNC’s NVIDA-Joint Lab on Mixed Reality research team plans to connect with relevant teams in the UK to host a forum on the sustainable preservation of art and cultural heritage at Ningbo City Exhibition Hall. In view of the success, the exhibition in Ningbo will be adapted for display at Nottingham UK as part of the project’s cultural exchange activities that aims to connect residence of Britain to art and culture in Ningbo, China.
