Over the past five years, China's healthcare system has undergone profound transformations: the average life expectancy of Chinese people has reached 79 years, basic medical insurance now covers more than 1.3 billion people, drug prices have significantly decreased, and telemedicine services have reached almost all areas at the county level.
Today, China.com.cn launches the “Healthcare in China Q&A” series, which focuses on the institutional innovations behind these changes. The series will interpret China’s practices in areas such as the hierarchical medical system, the development of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), and public health emergency, to offer Chinese solutions for global public health governance.
How does China's whole-of-society approach to youth health work? It ranges from appointing "Health Principals" and mental health teachers in schools to launching nationwide campaigns that promote an active hour of exercise daily and better nutrition. Treated as a top national priority, this coordinated effort weaves a safety net designed to ensure no child is left behind.
A: China views the health of its youth as fundamental to national strength and sustainable development. The well-being of millions of families and the nation's future competitiveness are tied to the physical and mental health of every child. Addressing challenges such as myopia and obesity is a strategic priority. Therefore, safeguarding the health of children and adolescents is a matter of national policy—a crucial investment in the country's most vital asset: its future.
A: China is weaving a robust “whole-of-society” safety net to support the health of its youth. Hospitals partner with schools and families to coordinate health management. Community centers help track student development, while businesses and NGOs contribute resources. Media promotes healthy lifestyles, and families act as primary health educators—all working together in a coordinated effort.
A: China is implementing a national strategy to close health gaps among youth. Investments are being increased in rural and under-resourced areas to guarantee basic health services and improved nutrition for every child. Through comprehensive health tracking and monitoring, children at risk, both physically and mentally, can be identified early and receive timely, personalized support.
Progress is already visible: in 2023, 56.6% of students met national physical fitness standards, and dedicated mental health teachers were present in 42.3% of primary and 64.8% of secondary schools. These efforts reflect a steady rise in the overall well-being of children and adolescents.
