“昨天早上”不要翻译成“last morning”

“昨天早上”能不能说成“last morning”？

这是一个很多人都会搞错的问题。虽然“昨天晚上”可以说“last night”，但是将“昨天早上”翻译成“last morning”是错的——正确的说法是“yesterday morning”。

为什么会有这个区别呢？这还要从last的定义说起。

“last”的英文定义是“most recent or nearest to the present time”，相当于“刚刚过去的那个”。也就是说，它是一个相对的、需要参照当前周期的单词。

举个例子，“last week”（上周）是以“本周”作为基点来参照的，其他的表达如“last month/year”也是同样的道理。

但是“last morning”可能会出现参照物模糊的问题。

举个例子，现在是12月30号，如果你在上午说“last morning”，那么它指的就是12月29号的早上。

但如果你是在12月30号下午或晚上说“last morning”，那么按照“last”的定义“刚刚过去的那个”，“last morning”实际上指的是12月30号的早上，而不是前一天的早上。

也就是说，“last morning”其实是一个相对概念，它应该理解为“刚刚过去的那个早上”，它不一定等同于“昨天早上”。

“last afternoon”也是同样的道理，它不能理解为“昨天下午”，而是“刚刚过去的那个下午”。

“last night”则是个异类。它指的是“刚刚过去的那个晚上”，但是因为晚上是一天周期的最后一段，所以不管你在一天的任何时间段里面说“last night”，它指的都是“昨天晚上”，不会有歧义。

国外英语学习论坛上面也有人问到了这个问题，里面有一名老外给出了这样的回答：

We don't say "last morning". Instead we say "yesterday morning". Similarly we say "yesterday afternoon". Perhaps the reason for this is that "last morning" could refer to the morning of today, if you use it in the afternoon. Language isn't logical, but this seems reasonable.

答主还提到，虽然我们不用“last morning”来指“昨天早上”，但是存在“the last morning of XX”这样的用法，此时“last”指的是“最后的，最后一个”。

比如：

On the last morning of my vacation, I stood by the pool, and thought about what a great time I'd had.

在假期的最后一个早晨，我站在泳池边，回想着自己度过了多么美好的时光。

另外，我们还要特别注意“the last”和“last”的区别。

“the last+时间段”，表示从过去持续到现在的一段时间。比如“the last week”指的是“刚刚过去的一周” 。

“the last+时间段”通常与完成时态连用，表示从过去某点持续到现在的状态。例如：

He has been sick for the last week.

他最近一周一直在生病。

而“last week”指的则是“上周，上星期”，时态要用过去时。比如：

He was sick last week.

他上周生病了。

“Last week/month/year”这些词前面也不用加on，比如“我上周遇到他”，应该说：I met him last week. 而不是：I met him on last week.
