涡阳县得名于北魏时期。北魏黄兴元年（467年），在涡水北岸设涡阳郡，依"水北为阳"命名。隋改淝水县，唐复名山桑县。清同治三年（1864年），为镇压捻军起义，清廷划亳州、阜阳、蒙城、宿州四州县部分区域，以雉河集为县治，循北魏旧名置涡阳县，属颍州府。2000年划归地级亳州市管辖。
