Mosquitoes have been found in Iceland for the first timein the wild, a researcher toldAFP on Monday, marking asignificant change for theisland nation long been known as one of the world's fewmosquito-free zones.
Three Culiseta annulata mosquitoes, two females and one male, were observed approximately30 miles north of the capital, Reykjavik, according to Matthias Alfredsson, an entomologist at the Natural Science Institute of Iceland.
The insectswere captured using "wine ropes,"a method that involves soaking ropes or fabric strips in a heated mixture of wine and sugar, then hanging them outdoors to attract sweet-seeking insects such as moths.
Like Antarctica, Iceland has historicallybeen one of the very few places on Earth completely free ofmosquitoes.
Alfredsson noted that while a single mosquito was reportedly found inside an airplane at Keflavik Airport many years ago, this is the first confirmed record of mosquitoes living and collected in Iceland's natural environment.
