“I am sorry to hear that; but why did not you tell me so before? If I had known as much this morning, I certainly would not have called on him. It is very unlucky; but as I have actually paid the visit, we cannot escape the acquaintance now.”

I am sorry to hear that; but why did not you tell me so before?”
“why did not you tell me so before”(你之前怎么不告诉我),贝内特先生明知妻子此前并未明确表达厌烦,故意“甩锅”,捉弄妻子。
If I had known as much this morning, I certainly would not have called on him.”
“If I had known... would not have called”(虚拟语气),看着“后悔拜访”,是故意逗妻子,掩盖自己“早已行动”的笃定。
It is very unlucky; but as I have actually paid the visit, we cannot escape the acquaintance now.”

第一句:“I am sorry to hear that; but why did not you tell me so before?”(“听你这么说我很遗憾,可你之前怎么不告诉我呢?”)
“Speaking with kindness is an art.”(温柔说话,是一种艺术。)
看这句:“If I had known as much this morning, I certainly would not have called on him.”(“要是今早知道你这么想,我肯定不会去拜访他了。”)
Art?
“Humor is the art of making others smile.”(幽默是让别人笑的艺术。)
接着读:“It is very unlucky; but as I have actually paid the visit, we cannot escape the acquaintance now.”(“真不巧,可我既然已经去了,这交情咱们就躲不掉了。”)
“Compromise is the art of living together.”(妥协是共处的艺术。)
“Simple life has its own art.”(平凡日子里藏着自己的艺术。)
“The art of life is to enjoy every moment.”(生活的艺术是享受每一刻。)
“Life is the most beautiful art, painted with our own hands.”(生活是最美的艺术,由我们亲手描绘。)
