When the Feldman Architecture team first drove over the ridges of California's Sonoma Valley, the oak forests and distant Napa Valley spread out in the morning light—the "rhythm of the rolling hills and the wild charm of nature"—became the essence of the design of Sonoma Ridge House. Rather than abruptly occupying the mountainous landscape, they weaved the warmth of home and the grandeur of the ridge into every material and space, transforming the house into a "habitat where people coexist with the mountains, the sea, and the vegetation."

The exterior facade evokes a "gentle dialogue between the building and the mountain ridge." The designers chose locally sourced light brown rammed earth bricks for the walls. The rammed earth's texture, reminiscent of the rough earth, creates a natural color transition with the deep green of the surrounding oak forest and the pale yellow of the mountain ridge. From a distance, the building appears to have "grown" from the mountain, without a trace of artificial sculpting. The low-sloping roof is clad in dark gray metal panels. The coldness of the metal is tempered by the warmth of the rammed earth, while also allowing for rapid drainage of rainwater during rainy days, achieving a balance of aesthetics and practicality. Large expanses of floor-to-ceiling glass are embedded within the walls, framed in a metal color matching the roof's color, creating a clean silhouette without obstructing views. In the early morning, as fog drifts over the mountain ridge, a thin layer of condensation forms on the glass, blurring the boundary between the house and the forest. At midday, the intense sunlight reflects the mountain's verdant landscape onto the rammed earth walls, imbuing the still building with the vitality of vegetation. When your fingertips touch the rammed earth wall, you can feel the subtle bumps and grooves of the soil particles. It is the dual warmth of nature and handcraft, just like the designer’s original intention that "architecture should respect nature."

The interior space unfolds as an "immersive fusion of light, shadow, and mountain views." The high-ceilinged entrance hall is sparsely decorated, with only a light gray abstract painting hanging on the wall. The lines of the painting mimic the undulating mountain ridges, echoing the actual mountain scenery outside the window, creating a "mountain in the painting" and "mountain outside the window" effect. The floor is paved with light gray natural stone, which feels slightly cool underfoot, but the coolness is neutralized by the oak beams hanging from the ceiling. These beams retain the oak's natural knots and grain, as if "extending" from the oak forest outside into the interior, firmly locking the forest's atmosphere within the space. The core of the living room is a "mountain view wall". The entire floor-to-ceiling glass "installs" the panoramic view of Sonoma Valley into the room. The sofa is made of light beige fabric, and the soft touch makes people want to curl up on it, looking across the lawn to the undulating ridges in the distance. In the evening, the setting sun gilds the mountaintops, and the glass reflects the colors of the sunset onto the stone floor. The whole space is immersed in warm orange-red, and even breathing becomes gentle.

The functional layout reflects a precise response to mountain living. The kitchen is adjacent to the dining room. Its countertop is clad in the same stone as the floor, and beneath it are light-wood cabinets. The wood grain of the cabinet doors echoes the oak ceiling beams. While preparing meals, the owner can gaze through the dining room's glass doors at the greenery in the courtyard or catch a glimpse of birds flying over the distant mountain ridge. The bedroom is located on the east side of the residence, shielded from direct afternoon sunlight. The headboard wall is clad in a soft, beige diatomaceous earth. At night, the bedside wall lamp illuminates, casting a warm glow across the wall, evoking a soothing mountain moonlight. The terrace serves as an "extension of the living room," featuring antiseptic solid wood flooring, a dark gray rattan sofa, and a round solid wood coffee table. On weekend afternoons, here, the owner brews a pot of black tea, the rustle of oak leaves in the wind lingering in the air, and the delicate fragrance of mountain vegetation lingers, completely dispelling the fatigue of work.

Feldman Architecture's design philosophy has never been "letting architecture conquer the mountains," but rather "letting architecture become part of the mountains." The designers captured the emotions of first encountering the Sonoma Ridge—the rolling green, the breeze carrying the fragrance of grass and trees, the sky that embraces all emotions—throughout the spatial details: rammed earth walls mirror the mountain's complexion, floor-to-ceiling windows frame the mountain views, and oak beams are the arms of the forest. In Sonoma Ridge Residence, residents don't need to deliberately "seek" nature; it is already integrated into every moment of life: awakened by the chirping of mountain birds in the morning, watching light and shadows play on the rammed earth walls in the afternoon, gazing at the sunset with family on the terrace in the evening, and falling asleep to the sound of the wind at night.

Ultimately, this residence proves that the best mountain living is one that fosters a natural connection with the mountainscape and vegetation. When urban dwellers step into Sonoma Ridge Residence, they temporarily unburden themselves of the fatigue of life. Enveloped in rammed earth and oak, surrounded by light and shadow, and surrounded by mountain views, they rediscover their true connection with nature and find a deep, peaceful place within.
