正值《头文字D》上映20周年，导演刘伟强接受采访分享创作轶事，回应《头文字D2》开拍传闻：“我已经不止一次去勘景，还跟出版社的人见过面，剧本也写好了，甚至开始买车，突然间就搞不成了。”刘伟强猜测可能是日本版权方觉得“国宝漫画应由本土导演执导”，表示如果真要拍《头文字D2》，想交给周杰伦执导，“他那么喜欢做导演，但他又不太敢。”
