Three Gorges Dam, one of the world's largest hydropower projects, has generated more than 1.8 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity as of August 31, according to the operator. The output is equivalent to saving about 540 million tonnes of standard coal and cutting around 1.48 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide.
Together with the Wudongde, Baihetan, Xiluodu, Xiangjiaba and Gezhouba plants, the dam anchors the world's biggest clean energy corridor. In the first half of 2025, the six-station system produced 126.66 billion kWh, up 6 billion from a year earlier and the highest for the period on record. That volume equated to saving 38.2 million tonnes of coal and reducing 100 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
