In a quiet neighborhood in Hopkins, Minnesota, JMAD Architects injected a modern European soul into a traditional residence. This spatial innovation from "one and a half floors to two floors" is centered on "contemporary translation of traditional essence". Through material collision, traffic line reconstruction and functional upgrade, while preserving the community memory, it builds a modern living model that seamlessly connects the vitality of the swimming pool with indoor life.

在明尼苏达州霍普金斯的静谧街区，JMAD 建筑事务所为一栋传统住宅注入现代欧式灵魂。这场从 “一层半到全两层” 的空间革新，以 “传统精髓的当代转译” 为核心，通过材质碰撞、动线重构与功能升级，在保留社区记忆的同时，构建起泳池活力与室内生活无缝衔接的现代栖居范本。

The exterior facade of the renovated building is designed with the tone of "dialogue between the old and the new": the original stone base is used on the ground floor, and the rough texture of the rough stone retains the historical texture of the block; the newly added steel structure frame on the second floor is wrapped with dark gray metal plates, and its smooth surface forms a "rough vs. refined" texture contrast with the stone. The sloping roof was redesigned into a "zigzag skylight", while retaining the traditional sloping roof outline, a large area of glass was introduced to bathe the loft space in natural light. The window frame lines were simplified from classical wooden blinds to narrow aluminum alloy profiles, but the rounded chamfers were retained at the corners, which is in line with the elegant curvature of European-style buildings.

改造后的建筑外立面以 “新旧对话” 为设计基调：底层沿用原有石材基座，粗犷的毛石纹理保留着街区的历史质感；二层新增的钢结构框架采用深灰色金属板包裹，其平滑表面与石材形成 “粗糙 vs 精致” 的质感对比。坡屋顶被重新设计为 “折线形天窗”，在保留传统坡顶轮廓的同时，引入大面积玻璃，使阁楼空间沐浴自然光。窗框线条从古典木质百叶简化为窄边铝合金型材，却在转角处保留圆弧倒角，暗合欧式建筑的优雅弧度。

By adding a second floor, the residence has achieved a transformation from a "compact" to a "stretched" type: the original attic area has been transformed into a transparent master bedroom suite, with a sloping skylight that brings in starlight and morning mist. The custom-made wooden bed is backed by a whole storage wall, and the relief pattern on the headboard is taken from the acanthus leaf decoration of classical architecture, reinterpreted with modern milling technology. The children's room and guest room are arranged in an orderly manner along the corridor, and the wall is painted with erasable magnetic paint, which not only has the three-dimensional lines of European wall panels, but also meets the interactive needs of modern families.

通过加建二层，住宅实现了从 “紧凑型” 到 “舒展型” 的蜕变：原有的阁楼区域被改造为通透的主卧套房，斜顶天窗引入星光与晨雾，定制的木质卧床背靠整面收纳墙，床头背板的浮雕纹样取材自古典建筑的莨苕叶饰，以现代铣削工艺重新诠释。儿童房与客房沿走廊有序排布，墙面采用可擦写磁性涂料，既有欧式护墙板的立体线条，又满足现代家庭的互动需求。

The first floor connects the living room, kitchen and dining room to form a "social core" area. The floor is made of herringbone ash wood flooring, whose warm texture forms a sharp contrast with the black steel beams on the ceiling - the steel beams retain the original welding points of the industrial style, but are edged with simplified scroll patterns at the ends, achieving a subtle balance between "industrial aesthetics" and "European elegance". The living room fireplace is wrapped in Carrara white marble, abandoning traditional carvings and only outlining the frame with metal lines, paired with a suspended wooden TV cabinet, creating a visual image of "modern life growing on a classical base".

首层打通客厅、厨房与餐厅，形成 “社交核心” 区域。地面采用人字拼花的白蜡木地板，其温润质感与天花板的黑色钢梁形成强烈对比 —— 钢梁保留工业风的原始焊点，却在末端以简化的涡卷纹收边，实现 “工业美学” 与 “欧式典雅” 的微妙平衡。客厅壁炉以卡拉拉白大理石包裹，摒弃传统雕花，仅以金属线条勾勒边框，搭配悬空式木质电视柜，营造出 “古典基座上生长出现代生活” 的视觉意象。

The kitchen adopts a "floating island" design. The center island countertop is made of volcanic rock. Its natural pores echo the ruggedness of the stone base, and the cabinet below is made of matte skin-feel panels, which feel as soft as velvet on your fingertips. The wall cabinets abandon the complicated lines of traditional European cabinets and present a minimalist form with handle-free push-type door panels, but the retro brass handles are embedded in the corners, becoming the visual focus. A chandelier made of metal wires and glass beads hangs in the dining area. When the lights are on, the glass beads refract bright light spots like Baroque crystal lamps, forming a "dialogue of light" with the rock slab countertop of the dining table.

厨房采用 “悬浮岛台” 设计，中岛台面选用火山岩材质，其天然孔隙呼应石材基座的粗犷，下方柜体则以哑光肤感面板打造，指尖触感如天鹅绒般柔和。吊柜摒弃传统欧式橱柜的繁复线条，以无拉手按压式门板呈现极简形态，却在转角处嵌入复古黄铜把手，成为视觉焦点。用餐区悬挂一盏由金属线与玻璃珠串成的吊灯，灯光亮起时，玻璃珠折射出如巴洛克水晶灯般的璀璨光斑，与餐桌的岩板台面形成 “光的对话”。

The master bedroom bathroom is designed with "hotel-style luxury" as the orientation: the independent bathtub is made of egg-shaped matte stone, with a circle of rose gold metal inlaid on the edge, like a modern sculpture; the shower room is separated by long rainbow glass, and the hazy texture reveals the gracefulness of classical screens. The wall is paved with herringbone mosaic tiles. The pattern is inspired by the floor tile pattern of the Hall of Mirrors in the Palace of Versailles, but it is reinterpreted in Morandi colors, creating a "modern tranquility in retro tones."

主卧卫浴间以 “酒店式奢华” 为设计导向：独立浴缸采用蛋形哑光石材，边缘镶嵌一圈玫瑰金色金属，宛如一件现代雕塑；淋浴间以长虹玻璃分隔，朦胧质感中透出古典屏风的婉约。墙面铺设人字拼花的马赛克瓷砖，图案灵感源自凡尔赛宫镜厅的地砖纹样，却以莫兰迪色系重新演绎，营造出 “复古色调中的现代静谧”。

The designer directly connects the living room with the swimming pool area by enlarging the size of the French windows and adding folding glass doors. In the rainy season, the glass door is completely closed, and the living room becomes a "swimming pool viewing hall". The water-rippled glass partition allows the indoor light to produce sparkling waves; when the weather is fine, the door is hidden in the wall, forming a three-level transition space of "indoor living room - outdoor terrace - swimming pool". The terrace floor continues the indoor wooden floor, with a rotatable outdoor sofa, so that residents can switch between "water viewing" and "socializing" modes at any time.

设计师通过扩大落地窗尺寸与增设折叠玻璃门，将客厅与泳池区域直接连通。雨季时，玻璃门完全闭合，客厅成为 “泳池观景厅”，水波纹状的玻璃隔断让室内光线产生粼粼波光；晴好时，门体隐藏于墙体，形成 “室内客厅 — 户外露台 — 泳池” 的三级过渡空间。露台地面延续室内木地板，搭配可旋转的户外沙发，使居者可随时切换 “观水” 与 “社交” 模式。

The pool is surrounded by low hedges to define the space, and the planting boxes are made of the same stone as the building base, forming a visual continuity. The rest area is equipped with an outdoor fireplace, which echoes the indoor marble fireplace in shape, but is made of weathering steel to present a sense of age. At night, the ground lights hidden in the hedges light up, and the light outlines the contours of the plants, which complement the underwater lights in the pool, creating a "European courtyard under the moonlight" atmosphere.

泳池周边以低矮绿篱界定空间，种植箱采用与建筑基座同材质的石材打造，形成视觉延续。休憩区设置户外壁炉，其造型呼应室内大理石壁炉，却以耐候钢材质呈现岁月斑驳感。夜间，隐藏于绿篱中的地灯亮起，光线勾勒出植物轮廓，与泳池水下灯交相辉映，营造出 “月光下的欧式庭院” 氛围。

The essence of this renovation is to redefine "modern European style" - it refuses to pile up symbols, but deconstructs tradition from three dimensions: proportion, material, and craftsmanship: the space scale is planned with the golden ratio of classical architecture, and elements such as wooden wainscoting and stone moldings are reinterpreted with modern materials, so that traditional aesthetics can adapt to the rhythm of contemporary life through "subtraction" and "translation". As the designer said: "The real European style should not be a specimen in a museum, but an elegant rhythm flowing in daily life."

这场改造的本质，是对 “现代欧式” 的重新定义 —— 它拒绝符号堆砌，而是从比例、材质、工艺三个维度解构传统：以古典建筑的黄金分割比例规划空间尺度，用现代材料重新诠释木质护墙板、石材线脚等元素，通过 “减法” 与 “转译” 让传统美学适配当代生活节奏。正如设计师所言：“真正的欧式风情，不应是博物馆里的标本，而该是流动在日常生活中的优雅韵律。”

When the morning sun shines through the folding skylight onto the acanthus leaf relief in the master bedroom, and when the evening light from the swimming pool reflects on the metal steel beams in the living room, what we see is not only a spatial transformation, but also an aesthetic dialogue across time and space - the warmth of the old times and the edge of the new generation are intertwined here, ultimately composing a symphony of living for a modern family.

当清晨的阳光透过折线天窗洒在主卧的莨苕叶浮雕上，当傍晚的泳池波光映照着客厅的金属钢梁，我们看到的不仅是一次空间改造，更是一场跨越时空的美学对话 —— 旧时光的温度与新世代的锋芒在此交织，最终谱写出一曲属于现代家庭的居住交响诗。
