China has taken swift and firm countermeasures following the latest U.S. tariff hike on Chinese imports, in a move to safeguard its legitimate rights and interests. The Chinese government on Wednesday announced that it would raise additional tariffs on products imported from the U.S. to 84 percent, add six U.S. firms to its unreliable entity list and place 12 U.S. entities on its export control list. All of these measures went into effect at 12:01 p.m. on Thursday.

"Against the backdrop of an increasingly complex global trade environment, especially in the face of the U.S. tariff bullying, China has quickly taken countermeasures, and in this process, it played a key role in pursuing new quality productive forces, optimizing the layout of the industrial chain, insisting on scientific and technological innovation, and promoting high-quality development," said Cai Tongjuan, Director of the Macro Research Department and Research Fellow of the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies (RDCY), in a recent interview with China Youth Daily.

Cai noted that scientific and technological innovation is leading industrial upgrading. Facing external pressure, China has increased investment in research and development of original and disruptive technologies, promoted the transformation of traditional industries into high-end and intelligent industries, and improved its position in the global value chain.

"In the context of heightened trade tensions, China is committed to improving the domestic industrial chain and reducing its dependence on external supply. By strengthening independent R&D and production capabilities, it is ensuring supply chain security in key areas," Cai said. "For example, in the petrochemical industry, China's industrial chain is relatively complete, its product self-sufficiency is strong, its external dependence is low, and it can effectively respond to external tariff shocks."

Cai also pointed out that new development momentum can be cultivated by promoting high-quality development. It is significant to strengthen scientific and technological innovation, especially original and breakthrough scientific and technological innovation, and accelerate the realization of high-level scientific and technological self-reliance.
