The Traveler:
Wang Shaoqiang's Journey to the West
In Reflections on Travel , the American writer and art critic Sontag wrote: "Travel itself was once a perverse activity. The Romantics believed that fundamentally the self was a traveler - a constantly seeking, homeless self who belonged to a place that simply did not exist, or had ceased to exist, an idealized world that made the destination indeterminate. Travel has since become a prerequisite for a modern consciousness and worldview - a catharsis for the longings and despairs of the heart. In this sense, everyone is a traveler in the potential sense of the word." The poet Li Bai expressed this concept more thoroughly: "Heaven and earth are the inverse travelers of all things; time is the passerby of a hundred generations. And life floats by like a dream, in geometric exuberance." Travel is a perverse activity, according to Sontag, in that it is an escape from the track of daily life. Thus dreaming is also a perverse activity, in which we alight in heaven and plunge back to earth, mundane and sublime all at once. In fact, does life not also resemble a dream of spring and autumn? Likewise, life is also a journey, a physical body living, expiring, and reborn, again and again. Indeed, each of us is a traveler, filled with longing and despair, and always on the road.
In recent years, Wang Shaoqiang and his entourage journeyed to the Southwest and Northwest China for a human geography survey trip. Having combed through geological histories, travel notes, ancient painting theory, archaeology, and other documents, Wang and his group explored the local natural landscape, its geological features, minerals, and cultural history. These studies served as a unique method of painting research, one designed to explore the current innovative possibilities of traditional ink and wash media. The works displayed in this solo exhibition are chiefly the results of this westerly expedition.
In this collection of Wang Shaoqiang's works, one acknowledges human beings as travelers - curious about the unknown, eager for freedom, and in search of eternity. In these paintings, a grid resembling an ancient map's longitude and latitude lines crisscrosses the background of the picture. Landscapes wildly overlap the grid, penetrating while enveloped by it. They are at once like ancient anonymous maps lost in time, as well as natural landscapes rendered in the style of google satellite maps, featuring technical and rational characteristics, but also with mysterious colors. The grids are interwoven horizontally and vertically, with unquestionable certainty and irresistible expansiveness, presenting the puzzle of our human cognition of nature. The picture is mostly a partial view, intended as an endless extension of the river and the mountain, not limited to the visible space of the painting. If the scope framed by these grids in the picture is known and mastered by human beings, then the unimaginable void outside is uncharted territory. Human beings are sitting on the well, watching the sky, yet their ambition is never ending, and thus destined to be on the road, exploring and pioneering, forever. Wang Shaoqiang's landscape is a source of knowledge. Through exploring the evolutionary history of China's West, and immersive geological fieldwork in the region, he has gained insight and creative inspiration.
