Hand in Hand to Solve Mental Problems
Mental health issues are the leading impediment to college students' all-around development. Mental illness can affect students’ motivation, concentration, and social interactions, which often go hand-in-hand with other health and behavioral risks, like drug abuse and violence. Since many health behaviors and habits are established in adolescence that will carry over into adult years, it is of paramount significance to help college students cope with mental health problems timely. Critical supports and services need to be comprehensive and community-wide, which include parents, teachers, and school administrators.
To begin with, parental involvement in mitigating mental health issues is advisable. First and foremost, they can communicate openly and honestly with their adolescents, including about values, so that they can find the opportunity to facilitate healthy decision-making. Furthermore, creating a sense of belonging can’t be neglected. Feeling connected and welcomed is essential to adolescents' positive adjustment, self-identification, and sense of trust in others and themselves. It’s wise for parents to spend time with their adolescents enjoying shared activities, become engaged in school activities and help with homework, or volunteer at their adolescent’s school. Last but not least, communicating regularly with teachers and administrators can help provide consistent expectations and support for depressed adolescents.
Teachers are expected to shoulder the responsibility to support depressive students as well. They can first educate themselves and others on the symptoms of mental health issues. For instance, if a student is dealing with social anxiety, it may be harder for them to participate in a class group discussion; if a student has been through a trauma such as sexual abuse the night before, they are certainly not going to care how to solve problems in math. Teachers can make a difference just by recognizing signs and symptoms students are exhibiting, thus providing help accordingly. For example, teachers can assign classmates as volunteer assistants, provide private feedback on academic performance, and even allow exams in an alternate format such as orally versus essay form. Through working with students and their families, teachers should make sure the students are receiving the best help available.
Schools also play an indispensable role in assisting students with mental health problems. Above all, a positive, safe school environment should be ensured. Feeling safe is critical to college students' learning and mental health, which needs regulators to promote positive behaviors such as respect, responsibility and prevent negative behaviors such as bullying and harassment. In addition, school crisis teams should include relevant administrators, security personnel, and mental health professionals who collaborate with community resources. Besides, places of recreation centers like vibrant green spaces, indoor fitness centers, and school concert centers can be invested and put into construction. What’s more, it is important to implement comprehensive assessment rather than score-oriented evaluation, encouraging students to walk out of the classroom, have more time to laugh with friends, and embrace nature.
In a nutshell, college year is a time for young people to have a healthy start in life. It’s high time that parents, teachers, and school regulators worked hand in hand to create protective relationships with students and help them grow into healthy adulthood.
