古代有天圆地方的说法，一般来说，三足鼎是圆鼎，用来祭天；四足鼎是方鼎，用来祭地。演变到瓷器上，圆形器物无论从形象和实用价值，搭配三足，看上去都更协调更美观。所以无论是青铜器还是瓷器，只要是圆形的器物，我们看到更多的就是三足造型了。
