50岁的飞行员阿拉·佐巴扬（Ara Zobayan）在坠机前做了一个飞入云层的错误决定，造成“空间定向障碍”（spatial disorientation），并在迷雾中迷失方向。调查员称，佐巴扬按照目视飞行规则执飞，虽被“法律禁止”飞入云层，但还是这样做了。
2020年1月26日，科比和其女儿吉安娜乘坐的直升机在加利福尼亚州卡拉巴萨斯市发生空难，机上9人全部遇难。
