老挝西北部的沙耶武里省，集中了老挝75%的养殖大象，也是老挝最大的野生象群栖息地之一。每年都会举行“大象节”。沙耶武里大象保护中心是法国“亚洲象”（ElefantAsia）组织建立的大象保护机构，由两名法国人和一名老挝人合办。该中心种满枝叶肥硕饱满的香蕉树，许多竹编的凉亭和摇篮点缀其中，像是一个动物乐园。
