James Whiting出生于1949年，命运的首次眷顾使得他拥有演奏口琴的天赋。第二次机遇降临时，他选择了他的艺名，或者说，是他的艺名找到了他。某个夜晚，在一个装满黑胶唱片的垃圾桶里，Whiting找到了一张Sidney Bechet的名为 “Sugar Blues”的专辑。从那个夜晚开始，“Sugar Blue”就成为跟随他至今的名字。

They say things happen when you less expect them. Sugar Blue’s life seems to fully mirror this paradigm, as it is interspersed with the intervention of what we would call “destiny”.
Born James Whiting in 1949, chance first hit him when he was gifted an harmonica instead of a saxophone. Destiny again made him choose his stage name –or better let his stage name find him. A night, in a trash bin full of vinyl records, he found an old album named “Sugar Blues” by Sidney Bechet. From that night on, that was his name.
Destiny would hit him a third time a few decades later in Paris, where he moved following the advice of world renowned pianist Memphis Slim. According to the legend, he was discovered by Rolling Stones member Mick Jagger busking on the street, and was then invited to join in the recording of world famous album “Some Girls”, released in 1978. It is Sugar Blue’s harmonica blasting on the Rolling Stone’s platinum hit “Miss you”.
时运不济的时候，才华和勇气就会慢慢滋生。和滚石乐队一起录制和巡演后，Sugar Blue选择拒绝继续跟随他们，转而去寻找自己的声音。

Where destiny fails, there come talent and courage. After recording and touring with the Stones, he turned down the offer to follow the band in order to look for his own sound.
This mirrors his declaration in a recent interview: “It is the quest that teaches you something. What you know is not important, it’s what you don’t know that matters.”
This research led him to go back to Chicago in 1983, despite his growing renown as a session player. There after playing two years with friend and mentor Willie Dixon, he put together his own band. He then published his first solo albums, including original compositions and classic blues covers, “Crossroads” (1979) and “From Chicago to Paris” (1982).
His courage was rewarded in 1985, when he jointly received the Grammy for Best Traditional Blues Album “Blues Explosion”, a compilation album recorded at Montreux Jazz Festival.
几年后，Sugar Blue发布了另一张原创专辑《Blue Blazes》 (1994), 紧随其后的是《In Your Eyes》 (1995) ，2007年，又发行了《Code Blue》。他最近的一张专辑《Thresold》是在2010年1月26日发行。今年夏天，我们将能欣赏到正在制作中的一张全新的专辑。

After a few year hiatus, he published another original album “Blue Blazes” (1994), followed by “In Your Eyes” (1995) and “Code Blue” (2007). His most recent album ”Threshold”, was released on January 26, 2010, and he is currently working on a new album that will see the light in the summer.
It must be this endless research for new sounds, together with his talent, that led him to become an harmonica virtuoso, whose style is incomparable to anyone else’s. His sound mixes classic blues, R&B, rock’n’ roll, and fusion and brought a lot of well renowned artists stemming from different genres to want him to play by their side: Bob Dylan, Prince, StanGetz, Frank Zappa, Art Blakey, B.B. King. He has also appeared on screen and in the musical score of Alan Parker’s Angel Heart, starring Robert De Niro.
Willie Dixon作为他人生中最有影响力的大师一直鼓励他去创作他所热爱的主题。遵循着这个教诲，加上对爆炸性独奏的热爱，Sugar Blue开创出一种在技术上令人震惊又充满灵魂的音乐风格。

Though the most influential master in his life was probably Willie Dixon, who encouraged him to always write about subjects he is passionate about. It may be following this advice and his love for explosive solos, that he developed a style that is technically astounding, yet full of soul.
Quite simply put, Sugar Blue is a Living Legend of the Blues and Jazz. He is one of the all time greatest of the genre and once you have witnessed this performer live, you will understand why he is known as the “Jimi Hendrix” of the Harmonica.
在芝加哥，苏黎世，海牙，昂蒂布，尼斯，戛纳，蒙特利尔，皮斯托亚，伯尔尼等世界各地超过30个国家演出后，Sugar Blue在2017年首次亮相中国并获得了众多乐迷的喜爱和欢迎，在北京Blue Note的表演一票难求。幸运的是，命运将于4月27日至28日将他带回北京，他精湛的技巧和灵魂一定会让中国观众再次迷醉。
After playing in more than 30 countries around the world – Chicago, Zuerich, The Hague, Antibes, Nice, Cannes, Montreal, Pistoia, Berne- he made his debut in China in 2017, he was welcomed by an enthusiastic crowd during a sold-out show at Blue Note. Destiny is fortunately going to bring him back to Beijing on April 27-28, once again he will surely mesmerize the Chinese audience with his technique and soul.
