在1959年，一百二十岁高龄的虚云大师去世，他去世时，脸上没有一点痛苦的表情，是安详的死去，而且，他的两个眼睛是睁开的，据说佛家称这种为金刚相。他火化以后，弟子们遵照他的遗嘱，将自己的骨灰撒入水中，他希望自己可以和水结伴。他死后，还得到了数百粒五色舍利子。
