研究人员发现，仙女座星系外围微弱的星系晕中的恒星大多都来自于M32的前身。他们将M32的前身命名为M32 P，认为这是本星系群中仅次于仙女座星系和银河系的第三大星系，大约在20亿年前被仙女座星系蚕食，最终剩下一个致密的星系核。有意思的是，这只是一段小插曲。天文学家根据观测推断，大约三十几亿年后，本星系群将迎来大一统——银河系与仙女座星系碰撞与合并。
