The Yangzhou Heyun Art Troupe, a folk cultural group established in 2024, has, in just two years, spread Chinese culture to countries such as Djibouti, South Korea, and Zimbabwe. During this visit to India, the program was designed to reflect the troupe’s identity of “canal themes, Chinese aesthetics, and Yangzhou characteristics”. It combines various forms of art, including traditional opera, intangible cultural heritage puppetry, traditional music, and martial arts, while balancing artistic quality with aesthetic appeal.
The chorus “Xiao Ya Deer’s Melody” opens the performance with its ancient and soothing melody; the Peking opera “Li Hua Ode” features a graceful singing style that showcases the elegance of Chinese culture; the male solo “Tarim River” is accompanied by melodious hand drums, creating a deeply moving atmosphere; the dance “Joyful Bell Drums” has lively and energetic movements, allowing audiences to experience the open and inclusive character of the Chinese nation; the classical music “Bangqiao Song” has a refined tone, and under the accompaniment of fishing drums and simple instruments, it embodies the charm of Yangzhou; the martial arts performance “Canal Exploration” combines Chinese martial arts with playing of the guzheng and pipa. The martial actions are strong, while the music is elegant, telling stories of the Grand Canal through this balanced combination of strength and delicacy; the classic piece “Jasmine Flower” has a fresh and graceful melody, along with graceful dance movements, conveying the unique elegance of Eastern culture; “Double Puppets” offers many highlights: the puppets, which can change faces and write characters, are vividly portrayed, showcasing the unique skillfulness of Yangzhou’s intangible cultural heritage; the pipa solo “Ten Faces of Ambush” features dynamic strings and a powerful sound, demonstrating the impressive power of traditional folk music; the final chorus “Spring Wind Across Ten Thousand Miles” has an uplifting voice, bringing the performance to a successful conclusion.

The rehearsal scene was lively. The actors took turns on stage, working on various aspects such as singing styles, physical movements, musical instrument arrangements, and stage transitions. There were performances based on the canal theme, which are rooted in Yangzhou’s local culture. Additionally, there were also performances of intangible cultural heritage items at the national and provincial levels, including puppetry and martial arts. The performance effectively showcased both traditional Chinese culture and the unique cultural charm of Yangzhou.
In addition to the stage performances, the delegation will also bring along exhibits of Huaiyang cuisine. This “Art+” model, which combines artistic performances, the tasting of Huaiyang cuisine, and economic and trade exchanges, aims to promote friendly relations between the two countries.
