日军占领南京后，在伪政府的支持下，南京的日本居留民会决议在五台山修建南京神社，其建设始于1941年10月，竣工于1944年。此照片由德国摄影师赫达·莫里逊拍摄于1944年夏天。
抗战胜利后，1946年国民政府将南京神社改造为中国抗战阵亡将士纪念堂。 现神社遗址仍在南京市五台山体育中心内，作为罪证类文物保留。
