A recent notice at a market in Suzhou, Jiangsu province, banning customers from peeling fava beans on the premises has triggered widespread online discussion. Some netizens speculated the rule was linked to "fava bean disease" — a condition they claimed could be triggered even by the smell of fresh beans.
The topic quickly went viral. Among tens of thousands of comments, some users said they personally experience nausea when exposed to the odor of fava beans, while others shared stories of friends being diagnosed with the illness after eating the beans. Many admitted they had never heard of fava bean disease before.

According to a report by Yangtze Evening News, the manager surnamed Yang of the market in Suzhou explained that the notice was issued after repeated incidents where leftover bean shells and loose beans on the floor caused elderly customers to slip. The market has already had to pay compensation in several such cases.

"It's manageable when one or two people do it, but when many customers peel in public areas, our staff can't keep explaining and cleaning up individual messes," Yang said. He noted that vendors place the shells in designated bins for prompt removal, but customers leave shells scattered unpredictably, making clean-up far more difficult.

As for online claims linking the ban to fava bean disease, Yang clarified that the market's sole concern is safety and hygiene. "There's nothing wrong with the beans themselves, and normal sales are fine. We're simply reminding customers not to peel them inside the market."
The notice has since been replaced with a new sign that explicitly reads: "Customers are strictly prohibited from peeling fava beans in the market."
What exactly is fava bean disease? A senior traditional Chinese medicine physician explained that it is known medically as G6PD deficiency — a hereditary hemolytic disorder. It is more commonly seen in regions south of the Yangtze River.

A hematologist reassured the public that there is no need for excessive worry. Simply touching or peeling fava beans, or inhaling their odor, generally does not trigger the disease. The real risk, she said, is for individuals with the genetic predisposition who eat them, which can induce acute hemolysis.
