以太坊联合创始人 Vitalik Buterin 发文表示，过去过多软件被推向云端而非 “本地优先（local-first）”，包括游戏领域，这是一个 “巨大的悲剧”。他还提出设想：若早在 2000 年就建立类似 “电子设备销售税自动按使用贡献分配给开源软件” 的资助机制，或许当前局面本可避免。云端给用户带来了便利，但代价是用户主权与自由的丧失。以太坊的意义，就是要重新夺回用户的主权与自由。
