水质更是如此。鲤鱼耐受低氧的能力非常突出。当一些高耗氧鱼类因为缺氧而浮头甚至死亡时，鲤鱼往往还能坚持很久。这得益于它相对简单的生理结构和对恶劣环境的本能调节。它喜欢生活在静水或缓流的水域，比如湖泊、池塘、水库的底层。那里通常有丰富的腐殖质，水底可能还有些淤泥。对别的鱼来说，这环境或许不够“干净”，但对鲤鱼，这就是它的餐厅和游乐场。它用极强的适应力，把别人眼中的劣势，变成了自己的生存主场。

安静与隐蔽，鲤鱼性格里的另一面别看鲤鱼在餐桌上是一道硬菜，它在自然界里，其实是偏谨慎和胆小的。它喜欢安静、光线稍暗、有遮蔽物的环境。茂密的水草丛、倾倒的树根下、岩石的缝隙、桥墩的阴影处，都是它钟爱的栖身之所。这些地方不仅能躲避阳光直射（鲤鱼不太喜欢强光），更能为它提供至关重要的安全感，以躲避水鸟等天敌的捕食。
