10月13日晚间，中国联通官方微信账号发文称，中国联通已正式获得开展eSIM手机运营服务商用试验的批复。今年9月中旬，苹果推出了其在全球范围的首款纯eSIM机型——iPhone Air。随后，三大电信运营商均表示，已经具备相关技术，正在等待有关部门通知。
