In Hoh Xil, a treasured land on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, not only is placer gold found, but it is also home to one of the world's most precious animals — the Tibetan antelope. The Tibetan antelope is unique to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and is a nationally protected species under Class I. They are known for their graceful physique, soft undercoat, and remarkable speed, forming an essential part of the plateau ecosystem.
They inhabit alpine meadows and desert grasslands at elevations of 4,000 to 5,500 meters and can even be seen as high as 5,200 meters in summer. They live in herds, often moving in small groups, and are exceptional runners, reaching speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour. Their diet consists mainly of grasses. Females give birth in summer, usually to a single calf. The Tibetan antelope is mainly distributed across Qinghai, Xinjiang, Tibet, and Sichuan.
Once heavily hunted for their undercoat used in the trade of shahtoosh, their population plummeted from over one million to near collapse. To protect these "spirits of the plateau", China has established nature reserves such as Hoh Xil, cracked down on poaching, and strengthened international cooperation. Today, the population has gradually recovered to about 300,000, making it a global success story in the protection of endangered species.
