As the salty Pacific breeze sweeps across Zihuatanejo Bay, curling around the contours of Cerro del Vigia, CAAM's Villas del Vigia, designed by CAAM, has already grown organically on this undulating coastline, symbiotically coexisting with nature. Spanning 2,495 square meters, the twin towers A and B, along with seven villas (140-260 square meters each), avoid harsh architectural lines that disrupt the coastline. Instead, they gently "fit" the living spaces into the uneven terrain, allowing each design to become a bridge between nature and life.
The slope of the site was the first design challenge. Rather than forcibly leveling the land, the designers constructed a foundation structure that aligns with the topography to support the building. Like a gentle "scaffold" for the undulating coastline, it mitigates the awkwardness of the uneven topography while allowing the villa's base to flow naturally into the ground. As residents stroll through the entrance, there are no abrupt steps; instead, a path follows the curvature of the terrain. The gaps between the gravel and grass reveal traces of the sea breeze, making it feel as if each step leads closer to the sea rather than into an isolated building.
The building's massing reflects the designer's ultimate pursuit of lightness. The initial design starting point was two simple rectangles, but through repeated cuts and fractures, a "breathing" feeling was created: intentional cuts allow light to penetrate the building, gaps in the stairwell allow the sea breeze to circulate freely, and the once heavy walls are broken down into transparent "frames," freeing the space from enclosure. In the morning, sunlight filters into the corridor through these "gaps," casting a flowing shadow on the floor. In the evening, residents walking from the living room to the terrace have an unobstructed view across the courtyard, reaching out to the deep blue of the Pacific Ocean. This "unprotected" flow of space allows residents to constantly embrace nature.
The gentle curves on the building's facade are the soul of the entire design. Each floor of Towers A and B features curved edges, rather than sharp corners. When the midday sun shines directly on the building, the shadows cast by the curves gently unfold across the walls, like waves lapping across the sand. From a distance, the building ceases to be a rigid geometric block and instead follows the curve of the coastline, gently "leaning" toward the horizon, as if poised to merge with the azure Pacific. A resident, a marine photographer, often says, "Every time I come back from the beach and look up at this building, I feel as if it's connected to the sea. There's no harsh boundary, as if it grew out of the ocean."
The dialogue between concrete and glass seamlessly blends nature and living space. The rough, bare concrete walls, rooted to the earth like coastal rocks, withstand the erosion of the sea breeze, and feel the material's heaviness and stability. Extensive floor-to-ceiling glass, like open frames, frames the views of the fishing boats in Zihuatanejo Bay and the sunrise over the Pacific Ocean from the living room and bedroom. In the morning, residents sip coffee by the bedroom bay window, gazing out over the gradually brightening ocean and the fleeting silhouettes of seagulls. At night, the living room glass reflects the orange glow of the setting sun, while the light and shadows on the concrete floor shift with the changing sky, imbuing the cold, hard material with the warmth of the sea. This juxtaposition of hardness and softness perfectly embodies the needs of coastal living: a solidity that resists the elements while offering a transparent connection to nature.
The functional layout of each space is centered around maximizing sea views. In the smaller 140-square-meter apartment, the bedroom window faces the ocean. Awakening in the morning to the sound of waves, you can watch the sun rise over the water. The larger 260-square-meter terrace is spacious enough to accommodate gatherings of family and friends. In the evening, everyone gathers around the dining table, watching the sunset over the Pacific paint the sky a pink and purple, while the sea breeze carries the sound of distant fishing boats' motors. At such moments, the building becomes more than just a living space; it becomes a "time box" that holds warm memories. Even the corners of the hallways have been intentionally left with a view, allowing residents to catch a glimpse of the ocean's blue even on their way to the kitchen, imbuing everyday activities like chopping vegetables and brewing tea with the poetic beauty of nature.
This design concept of "coexisting with nature" actually stems from a conversation between the designers and local residents. Camilo Moreno of the CAAM team recalls meeting a fisherman who had lived by the sea for decades during his first site visit. The man said, "A house by the sea shouldn't block the wind, nor should it block the view of the ocean—the wind should be able to pass through, and the ocean should be visible in order for people to live comfortably." This statement became the core of the design: rather than pursuing dazzling form, they wanted the building to become an "extension of nature." The resident, a marine photographer, also commented, "I used to find no inspiration in the city. Here, the concrete reflects the shadows of the clouds, and the ocean outside the glass is a different shade of blue every day. I can finally capture the breath of the ocean through my lens."
As dusk falls, the lights of Villas del Vigia come on, and the curvilinear facades create a soft silhouette against the night sky, echoing the shimmering waves of the distant sea. The design here is not about "conquering nature," but rather "embracing it"—its organic volumes capture the sea breeze, its transparent glass embraces the ocean view, and its gentle curves echo the horizon. This allows everyone living here to find a comfortable rhythm with nature, accompanied by the Pacific Ocean. Perhaps this is what good seaside architecture should be: unassuming, unobtrusive, simply standing there, becoming part of the scenery and part of life.
