太平花在宋仁宗时期开始植于庭院之中，据传被宋仁宗赐名“太平瑞圣花”，后又被清朝道光皇帝改称“太平花”。陆游有咏太平花诗：“扶床踉蹡出京华，头白车书未一家。宵旰至今劳圣主，泪痕空对太平花。”
