Needle & Threadwasn’t the kind of record shop that showed up on maps.
It was tucked behind a flower stall, only open on weekends,
and it smelled like vinyl, cedarwood, and rain.
But what made it special wasn’t the albums—
it was theLyrics Log.
By the register, there sat a thick, weathered notebook.
At the top: “Leave a line that means something. Find one that does.”
Customers came and went.
Some scribbled lines from breakup songs,
others quoted unknown tracks with shaky hands.
Sometimes people wrote their names.
Most didn’t.
One rainy Saturday, Jamie flipped through it while waiting for a record to be cleaned.
On a page dated six months ago, in careful cursive, someone had written:
“And in the silence, I remembered how it felt to be seen.” —B
Jamie paused.
The line struck like a whisper she’d forgotten.
She grabbed a pen and added beneath it:
“And in reading this, I didn’t feel so alone.” —J
She didn’t think much of it.
But two weeks later, she came back—
and beneath her note, someone had replied:
“Funny how music does that— finds you when you're not looking.”
Signed again:
—B
So began theirlyric exchange.
No contact.
No identity.
Just messages stitched into songs.
They quoted Bowie and Mitski,
shared grief in Simon & Garfunkel,
flirted with Stevie Nicks.
Jamie kept coming.
Kept writing.
Kept hoping.
Then one day, a new note appeared on the last page:
“The log’s almost full. I’ll be here next Saturday at 4PM. If you want to say hi— I’ll be by the ‘Sad Songs for Happy People’ section. Wearing headphones. Bring your favorite B-side.”
Jamie arrived at 3:57.
Heart pounding louder than any record on the wall.
And there he was—
headphones askew, holding a vinyl with trembling fingers,
looking up like he already knew the last line she left.
She walked over.
No lyrics this time.
Just a smile.
And maybe,
the beginning of their own Side A.

Needle & Thread
