ADVOCACY RESOURCES
To support an effective opposit ion strategy against attacks on clean water, environmental protections, and policies, Waterkeeper Alliance has created a repository of tools and resources for Waterkeeper groups. This repository, available here, will be regularly updated based on policy developments, priorities, challenges, and opportunities. This content initially focuses on the U.S. presidential election and its implications for environmental issues, as it was created in response to requests from U.S. Waterkeeper groups. It was not intended to be exclusionary; however, we must consider that many of the policy decisions and actions from the Trump administration are likely to have global ramifications. For example, how has the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Agreement affected your region? Do you fear it will undermine global efforts to combat climate change? Are there other specific challenges or opportunities related to the political and environmental landscape in your region that we should be aware of? To ensure we are meeting the needs of all Waterkeeper groups and strengthening a united global response to clean water attacks, we encourage you to share feedback with Bart Mihailovich, Waterkeeper Membership Services Director, to inform timely and tailored support for your advocacy efforts.

On February 4, Waterkeeper Alliance issued a statement opposing Congressional Review Act resolutions aimed at repealing the commonsense Waste Emissions Charge under the Methane Emissions Reduction Program. Repealing the charge would allow major polluters to evade accountability, despite their years of unfulfilled promises to reduce emissions. Citing polling data showing strong public support for stricter methane standards, CEO Marc Yaggi urged Congress to reject these repeal efforts and to support measures to reduce methane pollution, create jobs, cut waste, and protect communities.
On January 30, Waterkeeper Alliance joined the Utah Rivers Council, Bocas de Ceniza Waterkeeper, Guayllabamba Waterkeeper, La Paz Waterkeeper, and Tijuana Waterkeeper to officially launch the Great Salt Lake Waterkeeper. Serving as the Great Salt Lake Waterkeeper is Amy Wicks, a member of the Miniconjou Lakota and Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe. With 30 years of nonprofit experience, three terms on the Ogden City Council, and her role as Northern Utah Programs Manager for the Utah Rivers Council, Amy brings extensive leadership and a deep commitment to water conservation, sustainability, and tribal issues.
The Great Salt Lake is the largest remaining wetland ecosystem in the Western United States, providing crucial habitat for 10–12 million migratory birds across 338 species that travel from every country in the Americas. Despite its significance, the lake faces growing threats from upstream water diversions and climate change, which are drastically reducing water flows. In her new role, Amy will lead efforts to restore sustainable water levels, protect critical habitats, and engage communities across the Americas in safeguarding this invaluable ecosystem. Welcome to the movement!
NEWS FROM THE MOVEMENT
Catawba Riverkeeper’s (North Carolina, U.S.) Northern Basin lab has been officially certified by the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Water Resources for benthic macroinvertebrate sampling, a key method for assessing water quality. This technique evaluates the presence of aquatic insects in streams, where diverse and pollution-sensitive populations signal healthy water conditions.
Hudson Riverkeeper (New York, U.S.) and partners are arguing against a proposed change to New York State Department of Environmental Conservation rules that would allow companies to withdraw water from salt waters around New York City and the lower Hudson River without needing a permit.
LA Waterkeeper (California, U.S.), alongside other environmental groups, successfully defended the Los Angeles Regional Water Board’s strengthened stormwater permit for the Santa Susana Field Laboratory. Their efforts ensured stricter limits on pollutants like PCBs, toxic metals, and radioactive waste entering the Los Angeles River, supported by enhanced monitoring. When Boeing sued to overturn the permit, LA Waterkeeper and its partners intervened, and the Los Angeles Superior Court upheld the permit, rejecting most of Boeing’s claims—a significant victory for water quality and public health.
Potomac Riverkeeper (District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, U.S.), Dean Naujoks, played a pivotal role in the aftermath of the tragic mid-air collision over the Potomac River near Washington, D.C. Utilizing his extensive knowledge of the river, he assisted recovery efforts by patrolling the waterway to locate and retrieve debris, including personal items and aircraft parts that had drifted miles downstream. Dean’s expertise in the Potomac’s currents and terrain proved invaluable to authorities working to piece together the events leading up to the collision. This heartbreaking tragedy underscores the critical role Waterkeepers play—not only in safeguarding clean water but also as stewards of their communities during times of crisis.
Suwannee Riverkeeper (Georgia, U.S.) helped address a flash flood sewer line break in Valdosta that went unresolved for two months. Their water quality testing pinpointed the issue, leading to a bypass by Valdosta Utilities. Three months after the break, Sugar Creek finally tested clean, underscoring the Riverkeeper’s vital role in protecting local waterways.
Watauga Riverkeeper (North Carolina, U.S.) and High Country Regional Director of MountainTrue, Andy Hill, shared insights about Hurricane Helene's impact on local waterways at App State’s Community Resilience Forum. Drawing from firsthand experience, he described the severe flooding and watershed devastation, highlighting his role in search efforts and welfare checks in the storm's aftermath.
We are excited to share the release of a gripping new documentary feature film, Confessions of a CEO, executive produced by our dear friend and longtime Waterkeeper Alliance Trustee and supporter, Tom Gegax. Debuting February 11 on Amazon Prime, Apple TV, and Fandango, following an 8-city limited U.S. theater release, the film offers a compelling critique of corporate America. Through the lens of Tom's life, it tells the story of a once-toxic CEO who transforms from a profits-over-people, philandering businessman into a populist messenger advocating against pollution, wealth inequality, and corporate capture of government. If you feel inspired, please share with friends who might connect with its message.
